I saw one back in the 1990s while walking down Mission Street [between 5th St. and 6th St.] in downtown San Francisco on a quiet Sunday afternoon.
A car came racing down 6th Street, turned left on Mission Street, followed by an SFPD police car with it's siren screaming, then turned right on 5th Street, with the police car following it.
[I was walking on Mission St. heading for the 5th & Mission parking garage]
The whole thing only lasted a few seconds because the car was going at least 60 mph.

(118,622 posts)I was a kid. They were after robbers who were robbing the neighbours down the hill. Pretty exciting when you are 6 or 7.

(2,064 posts)My father and I were stopped at a traffic light.
The light changed and a small Triumph sports car was coming from the other side.
It veered towards us and got T-boned by a car traveling at very high speed.
The sports car was spun around like a top and almost destroyed. I remember seeing car parts flying around.
The driver of the car being chased died instantly. One guy in the Triumph was thrown out of the car and had severe head injuries.
The driver of the Triumph was wearing a seatbelt and wasnt hurt that I noticed.
The police came flying up to the intersection just seconds after the accident.
It happened so fast I didnt realize how close we we to the collision.
Ive worn a seatbelt religiously ever since then.

(2,050 posts)In Tacoma Wa years ago, a well set up mustang GT about a 1990 was being chased on the freeway and took an off ramp I was waiting at at light near.
Guy was really hauling A and took the wide sweeping right handed at a great rate of speed, the police were 20-25 seconds behind him and by the time they passed where I was he was long gone.
I own a car that handles well, a 1998 mustang cobra, and there's no way I would push it that hard no matter what, of course I'd never try to outrun the police.
From what I remember they didn't catch the runner, it was amazing there wasn't a big wreck reported later that night.
Scary stuff.

(13,091 posts)An officer was behind a teenage driver at an intersection.
The officer had received a call about a robbery.
He had his lights and siren on.
He shouted on a loud speaker for the car in front of him to move forward.
He forced her to drive through a red light.
She was hit by oncoming traffic and killed.
There were no charges against the officer.

(62,406 posts)20 years ago. We were in a line of traffic everybody moving at a moderate pace. I noticed a cop car 2 cars behind us. I suspect that was why no one was passing or speeding.
Then out of nowhere came a car in the left lane passing everybody - I estimated he was doing at least 90.
Right after he went by the topper on the cop car lit up and they were off to the races.
We lost sight of them really quickly, but the traffic jam loosened up quickly.
I had looked at my mileage when the cop went by in case we went by later so I could see how far they went. Almost exactly 5 miles down the road the police were having a discussion with the motorist.
