Happy 73rd birthday, Mickey Dolenz.

Previously at DU: Happy Birthday George Michael Dolenz

Micky Dolenz

Gotta have a tune. Why not one of the best pop tunes from the entire '60s?

One more:

I think this used to be the song played during the closing credits for one of the seasons. I know I've heard it on the show. From Headquarters, For Pete's Sake:

This is also one of my fave Monkees tunes:

I have to say that if Peter weren't available, I think I could have found a way to get along with Davy on that desert island.

I first heard the Monkees in a VW van going over the Khyber Pass in Afghanistan. Eleven thousand feet down, and you couldn't see the railing.

He's a great singer.

10. It was a cassette played on one of those old Sony portable cassette players.

Mono. And it required new batteries for about an hour and a half of playing.

I bought the Monkees Greatest Hits and the cassette player in Tokyo in 1970. For years it was the only tape I had -- my parents bought Tom Jones and Petula Clarke.

They are all now engraved in my head. But I bought a CD of the Greatest Hits a few years ago anyway. Love it still.

Funny but true -- on the Monkees first big tour, Jimi Hendrix opened for them. That's how big they were.
