OK. Will someone PLEASE explain the character of Stefon on SNL?

I don't get it, what he represents. Usually there is a referential point to the people they represents, but Stefon confuses me. The actor is brilliant, but I don't have his reference nailed down.

Can somebody help me here?

The writers are trying to get him to crack. It is not rehearsed and he wings it. That is part of the fun of Stefon.

My mother didn't get humor in the 1970s. I had to explain a lot of it to her.

Like this one from a sitcom. One girl was waiting for her date and her sister asked if she liked the guy. The reply was "I must like him. I shaved past my knees."

I still giggle over that one. Mom just humphed.

And I always thought Bill Hader was one of the finniest and most talented on the show.
