Not talking about failure to retain the definition. For me, "eschatology" and "epistemology" are in that category: I know what they mean, but I have to refresh my understanding from time to time.
No, what I'm talking about here is a word like trope. I've looked it up, and here's the definition from Dictionary.com: "any literary or rhetorical device, as metaphor, metonymy, synecdoche, and irony, that consists in the use of words in other than their literal sense."
What the HELL does THAT mean??? And yes, I know and understand the definitions of metaphor, metonymy, synecdoche, and irony, but I STILL don't know what a trope is!
Do you have examples of a word (or words) that, despite your most studious efforts, leave you frustrated to this very day?
