I was in elementary school in the early 1950's and we celebrated Arbor Day every year. We'd get to go outside and the janitor and teachers would plant a tree somewhere on the school's property. We'd hear someone recite the poem "Trees" by Joyce Kilmer. Then there would be other activities outdoors.
