independent stores

maybe if you can buy it yourself and do it yourself, but I would never try that, even then not sure where you would get it that cheap

Actually the price is $79, plus $6.95

I rounded it up to $100, but it is actually $85 per Apple

Apple is reducing the price of an out-of-warranty iPhone battery replacement by $50 — from $79 to $29 — for anyone with an iPhone 6 or later whose battery needs to be replaced, available worldwide through December 2018. Details will be provided soon on apple.com.

3. It wasn't a pitch for me; went to authorized apple repair but it was 3rd party...

Still they sold all apple products so they COULD have tried that... It went fine and they were in touch with apple since they initially had a technical issue of some kind that got resolved.

4. it's not trivial to replace the battery, so the wait is not unreasonable.

many malls have kiosks who will fix iphone screens or replace batteries for cheaper in under an hour.

i've done it myself, it's not so hard once you know how but i had to watch a youtube video to learn how.
also special tools help, you can get a cheap kit from amazon/ebay.

it's not a sales pitch, though of course they hope you browse while you wait....

7. Apple has a significant discount for iPhone battery replacements

I don’t remember the price, but I was going to wait till closer to the end of the year when the deal runs out. Or I may just do it myself. It’s a pretty simple job. I’ve replaced a screen before which is harder.

13. I got a free iPhone 6S plus replacement

At the Apple store I was told to come back in 3 hours while they kept my iPhone for a $29.00 battery replacement.

When I returned to pick up my phone I was told they could not change the battery in my iphone, so they said they would give me a brand new iphone for the cost of the $29 batt replacement.

They told me that the two flexible tabs inside the phone that are pulled on to remove the battery were brittle from internal phone heat and age (2.5 years) broke off, so the battery replacement could not be accomplished.

I walked out with a new phone and iCloud flawlessly restored my backup onto the new phone. It was a good deal for me.
