James Mangold is writing and will direct a Star Wars stand-alone movie centered on Boba Fett, the feared bounty hunter and fan-favorite character, The Hollywood Reporter has exclusively learned.
The reveal comes as Disney and Disney-owned Lucasfilm prepare for the release of the latest Star Wars stand-alone film, Solo: A Star Wars Story. Solo, which opens Friday, is the second movie to be spun from the main Star Wars line Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was the first but it is the first to focus on a particular character.
Lucasfilm is developing movies on a slew of characters including Obi-Wan Kenobi, which has Stephen Daldry in negotiations to direct, although no writers are working on a script.
It was rumored that Simon Kinberg, the writer-producer behind the X-Men franchise and films such as The Martian, was working on a Boba Fett movie. It is unclear if the two projects are the same. Kinberg and Mangold are close, however, and the two worked on Logan, the X-Men spinoff that earned high praise last year.
Boba Fett was introduced in 1980s Empire Strikes Back and then appeared in 1983s Return of the Jedi as the mercenary who brings Han Solo to the slug-like crime lord Jabba the Hutt. Despite having a helmet over his face and very limited time onscreen (not to mention a slapstick death), the character, with his jet pack and battle-scarred armor, grew to cult status.

(66,316 posts)An otherwise execrable piece of shit, the SWHS had a cartoon segment in which Boba Fett debuts as an untrustworthy companion in an adventure with R2-D2 and C-3PO.
Boba Fett's initial popularity had a lot do with the free figure offer that began in 1978, before the holiday special aired, and the botched way it was handled, that made all of us kids really ache for more BobaL Fett. That second wave of figures came out before the holiday special, the first offer on the back of the package was before the special, but we didn't get the actual action figure until way after the special because the had to redesign the action figure. The initial offer promised us a Boba Fett with a working missile launcher, if we sent in our four proof of purchases. They realized that the missile launcher wasn't going to work out and what they eventually sent us, after a long delay of forever, was a figure without a working missile launcher in a plastic bag in a plain little box with a note that said sorry about the missile launcher thing, be sure to go to see Empire Strikes Back when it comes out in a few years." It was like the little orphan annie ring, but it only made us want that Boba Fett even more. After the holiday season they put new packages out that didn't show the rocket launcher as part of the offer. See this:
First batch of offers:
Then they changed to this:

(6,399 posts)We've now had two spinoff films in the last three years!
How will the other films compete?

(6,399 posts)Really, zero. The folks running the place totally get that. Even Jar Jar appearances in the Clone Wars were less well received than the rest of the series.
But there are a lot of kids that grew up with it and like the character and I always try to keep that in mind because it was their gateway into my favorite shared universe.

(56,828 posts)I never loved Boba Fett like other SW fans, but it could be an interesting movie.
would like to see a post Revenge of the Sith movie centered on Obi-Wan Kenobi, though. That could be interesting - Ewan McGregor could be the right age for the role now as well - he's getting close to 50 and Sir Alec Guinness was 63 when the original Star Wars movie came out

(6,399 posts)They've done some standalone stories of his time on Tatooine in the comics in the last few years that were interesting and open to a lot of potential in what can be explored. He's very game for revisiting the character as well which is a huge plus.

(6,399 posts)And I get the sense that we'll see a good portion of it with the new live-action TV series as well. Still disappointed that the 1313 TV series never got far.

Fett's few lines ( offered by Jeremy Bulloch, not the NZ actor who dubbed over the lines after the prequel trilogy debuted ) add to his enigma and sense of menace.
