Years, decades ago, Charles Kuralt's Sunday Morning did a spectacular expose on Earl "Speedo" Carroll when he was a janitor in an elementary school in New York City. I can't locate it anywhere, so we'll have to settle on this great Tom Meros interview:

9. Love that song. The Dell Vikings were the first interracial group of doo-wop.

I had read from many sources that they met while in the Air Force and "Dell Vikings" was the name of their platoon. For Beatlemanics this was also the song John Lennon was singing when Paul McCartney first saw the Quarrymen in July 1957.
