I may be late comer to watching this series, but I just started to view Season 1 it is haunting and the similarities are chilling.

(34,095 posts)I am loving the series, well loving is probably not the correct word but as always, the book is better.

(63,799 posts)sometimes the book is better, but just watching is very disturbing.
Could this possibly happen to us???

(90,758 posts)No red capes or white hats - but women are under attack.
States trying to force a woman on life support to carry a fetus. Women jailed for drug abuse - they need help not prison for "harming a fetus".
Constant attacks on abortion and even birth control.
The religious right constantly trying to impose their brand of religion on the entire population. Look at their views on marriage, homosexuality, and anyone not them - look at their champions in Congress (federal and state) and the laws they pass - the so-called religious liberty laws are designed for nothing more than to make the actions of the religious right legal - regardless of what those actions happen to be.
Small steps and big ones that erode away the rights of women and everyone else.
Just because we haven't been forced into groups of Handmaids, Marthas, and Econowives doesn't mean we are in any less danger. But if you look at their views on the poor, people of color, and all people who don't think like they do, they have, actually, grouped us already.
Look at Trump supporters and then ask yourself - would they go along with such a thing if Trump/Pence told them to do so?
You think an election will change how they think?
I'm not saying all hope is lost - I'm saying we can't afford to pretend they couldn't bring about a Gilead. Look at America now - the process to stop someone like Trump moves far slower than the process it would take to change our country forever - look at how quickly Trump and the GOP have moved their agenda along.

(23,296 posts)And I think it would be too upsetting for me to watch! I find that I cant watch much for tv and movies anymore unless its a comedy. Seems everyday life has more than its share of plot twists, Nazis, liars, lying deplorables and other villains. Anything with cruelty and violence repels me. I trust what everyone says about the series, however.

(2,187 posts)It could all happen now, although Gilead is more of a Mike Pence theme
Spanky is just a monster thru and thru but not particularly religious- but Pence is overly so.

(60,010 posts)Something you may want to know, tho:
The first season is true to the book, but I have heard a LOT of talk about Season 2 being focused on a lot of violence.
The term "torture porn" has been used more than once.

(11,427 posts)I think its because i want to make sure my daughters never have to live in that society.
The show has June saying it happened gradually so no one noticed how bad until it was too bad.
Yes its hard to watch just like the news is now but if hide our heads it could happen!
