(36,827 posts)The one in the picture is single barrel and going down from there you have their blended version which is still quite good (and not cheap). Originally they only distributed to Texas, but they have since branched out to other states although I'm not sure if they have made it to all 50 yet. If you have a Total Wine in your area that would be a good place to check.
I have toured their distillery and it's an impressive operation. It's still quite a small operation run by just a handful of folks and volunteers who do the bottling (the wax is applied by hand). All of the ingredients come from Texas except for the rye which doesn't grow well here. I would put it up against any Scotch, but then again I'm no fan of Scotch. There's better bourbons out there, but not many and those have a big differential in price and often are nearly impossible to get your hands on short of dealing with a scalper which is also true for their Cowboy Bourbon. Provided you can pay about $80 for your go-to bottle, I think it's hard to beat. A bottle lasts me about 4-6 months so not too bad. As it the case for all spirits, it's best in the first month or two so I wish they sold it in smaller bottles. The obvious solution is I just need to drink it faster, but that presents other problems. If you want something to mix or shoot, then best to look elsewhere. This stuff is made to sip.

(1,533 posts)That said, bourbon is good too.
I have 3 or 4 single malt Scotchs in the cabinet, none that I'm head over heels about. I prefer the Highlands over the Lowlands.
A defining character of bourbon is aging in new oak barrels. I'll never understand bourbons "finished in rum/wine/sherry barrels". It's not bourbon if it's aged in other than new oak barrels. Not that those products are bad, they just aren't "Bourbon", by definition.
My latest bottle of whiskey is Røknar, a rye whiskey made in northern Minnesota.

(26,257 posts)Tried this for the first time at a 'tasting table' in the Heathrow Airport Duty Free Shop. I would buy a bottle for my Dad's Christmas gift, every year after, and he LOVED it. Every time I take a sip, I think of him.

(10,014 posts)I was at a bar at a race track with my dad and he bought me a Drambuie neat just because it was from Scotland. He never drank hard liquor, I drink almost anything, and I have a bottle of Drambuie in my closet as I write.

about 20 years now. Costco was out of my usual brand so I decided to try their 12 year old blended Scotch. It's really very good. I'm going to experiment more with other higher end blended Scotch brands.

(36,827 posts)Single malt, single barrel, years it's been aged, etc. are more about marketing. There's blended whiskeys which are far better than unblended and vise versa. There's whiskeys aged 30 months which are far better than those aged 12-15 years. The ingredients used, how it's mashed, how it's distilled, how it's proofed, and how it's aged says a lot more about the final product, but it's harder to market those aspects.

(10,014 posts)But Ardbeg An Oa is a new favorite to go with my stand bys: Balvenie Doublewood 17 yo, Glenfarclas 21, Springbank 18, Highland Park 18, Scapa 16, Highland Park Dark Origins, Bunnahabhain 18 yo, and Glenmorangie Nector DOr.
The host at the last tasting asked that all the whiskies cost less than $70 a bottle. We had a fine, but mild, selection of Benromach 10, Glenrothes Bourbon Cask, Highland Park 12 Vikings Honour, Dalwhinnie 15, and Ardbeg An Oa. The host of the next tasting loves lots of peat so I'll have to balance that we some less peaty offerings.
With great whisky-enhancing food, excellent company, men in kilts, and a piper, it is always the best party in town.
