(23,078 posts)Women complain all the time about our terrible pockets that are too small to hold anything, especially not big enough for a cell phone. In the old days, i never had a problem carrying my phone in my pocket. it fit fine. But the last 5 years or so womens pants have started being cut different, no pockets on a lot of dress pants and if there are pockets any they are teeny tiny little pockets in the front that are totally useless and even he back pockets are too small for a cell phone. I'm not even talking about the bigger "Note" versions, even a std. I-5 or L6 doesn't fit.
Especially having done a lot of sewing in my younger years, this is a pet peeve of mine that even patterns are far skimpier for womens' wear vs. mens and multiply that x10 when talking about finished clothing. Grrr.

When I went to see an EWF concert last year, I found myself in a major quandary because I didn't want to carry a standard pocketbook (not to a concert, oh HELL no!) and the pocket issue reared its ugly head (this was in late summer so wearing a jacket with pockets was out). Ended up getting one of those wrist wallets which was small enough not to be too intrusive but large enough to hold my iPhone 6+ (with a case) + tickets + credit cards/cash and a few other items like tissues, etc). I ended up getting one of these at LL Bean -
It was still a bit cumbersome when holding it and trying to take pics at the concert but not excessively so and at least it had a strong wrist strap and I felt pretty secure carrying it. Plus it has well-made zippers and is made with sturdy material. It is now what I use for everyday when I am out and about without a need for a whole pocketbook. I can keep my car key (which is a long keyfob thing due to the car being keyless entry) in my pocket (MUST always have clothes with a pocket when out).
If I had had deep enough pockets, I could have had a slim wallet with what was needed + keys for one pocket and the phone in the other.

The key point in it was this -
So how can an industry that focuses on womenwhether it be models or products created primarily for a female demographicconsistently dodge the very people it markets to? Camilla Olson, creative director of an eponymous high tech fashion firm, points to inherent sexism within the industry. Mid-range fashion is a male dominated business, driven not by form and function, but by design and how fabric best drapes the body.
I honestly believe the fashion industry is not helping women advance, Olson said. And the lack of functional designs for women is one example. "We [women] know clearly we need pockets to carry technology and I think its expected we are going to carry a purse. When were working we dont carry purses around. A pocket is a reasonable thing.
https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2014/09/the-gender-politics-of-pockets/380935/
Basically they don't care because to some of these designers, women are mannequins and the "form and fit and flow" is more important. They want something that they feel is "good for them to look (gawk) at" not what she feels is functional for her to wear while still looking good to her.

(34,425 posts)Filled pockets look bad. So you are not only uncomfortable, you lose functionality.
One of the most bizarre trends that seems to be with us forever involves tennis clothes. For those who dont have ball kids, that is everyone but the elite pros, you need to be able to hold 2-3 balls. Mens shorts have pockets for this. But women have to stick balls under stretchy clothes, which sometimes involve pulling a ball from under a waistband or between your underwear and a tennis panty. Awkward, to say nothing of unsanitary.
BumRushDaShow
(128,699 posts)who want to "show off" their figures with form-fitting clothing (whether dresses, skirts, or pants), that's fine. And they realize that they have to find a way to carry their now-larger phones, where with the casual "skinny jeans" and short pockets, you can't do it. What I have seen used in that situation as an alternative, is the small backpack (or "daypack" ), some of which are made to look like pocketbooks and can get fancy (I actually use one myself) -
But for everyone else and particularly with tightened security at venues, it puts women at a big disadvantage not to have enough or deep enough pockets to be able to finally ditch the bag. Far too many of us have been there, done that, wore the t-shirt regarding "fanny packs" and cross-strap pocketbooks or other similar things that can still be ripped off the body like a regular pocketbook.
And yeah -for women's' sports like tennis, the traditional dress and bloomers (old-fashioned term for them ) just doesn't allow for carrying anything. I used to play varsity badminton in high school and it was the same issue and similar outfit - no place to put the extra shuttlecocks except in their tube along the side of the court. Trying to stuff a couple pieces of cork and feathers in the bra was a no-go!

(22,022 posts)The sale of popcorn was the only way our Pack was allowed to raise money for our programs. I was the Cubmaster and the lady who took on that role was fantastic! She got the Scouts so pumped up to sell popcorn that we ended up doubling our budget the first year she ran the campaign. It allowed us to buy a brand new, state-of-the-art race track for our annual Pinewood Derby. At the end of the year we still had a surplus that we carried over. She ran the popcorn sales for three years and when her son moved up to Boy Scouts, we arranged a special award in her honor.
My son followed his father: After attaining Star Scout, when faced with the choice of spending the weekends with a bunch of guys in the woods or hanging with the girls at the pizza parlor, in both cases the latter won out!
We enjoyed the program, for the most part. Our Pack and Troop were in a suburb of New York on Long Island and most of the kids were pretty good. The activities were fun, exciting and wholesome and I enjoyed reliving my own youth by participating as a Leader. There were a number of issues that could have caused problems, particularly the previous ban on gay kids being a part of the program but we never encountered that issue.
One thing that did make it easy to walk away from Scouting was that the local council decided to give their big annual award to none other than Bill O'Reilly who lived in the same town as we did. This choice exposed just how many Fox News-loving conservative idiots were among the fathers within the program. When my son explained his reasons for leaving, I had a counter-argument for each of his points until he mentioned O'Reilly. With that point in his favor, I agreed to his decision!
Good luck with your popcorn sales! I'm sure your kids will do well.

Nowadays, with the proliferation of cell phones, which are obviously not limited to men having them, it behooves women who like to carry them constantly (usually the youngin's ) to have a place to slide them when not in use as easily as men do.
I remember way back pre-"smart phone" when the "candy bar" phone was a "thing" but where one of the bragging points about one of the flip/clamshell phones - the Motorola Razr - was it being so slim that it could fit in pocket of the skinny jeans being pushed at the time.

As a man, I had the luxury of not even thinking about pockets when I made my purchasing decision. Costco had my size at a good price, done.
I discovered that, along with the standard four pockets, there's a small fifth pocket, just behind the right front pocket, expressly referred to as a cell phone pocket. It's perfectly sized and even has a zipper.
You're right about the proliferation of cell phones. Is there a reason that profit-maximizing capitalists don't respond by offering both sexes cell phone pockets? That's the kind of thing the free market is supposed to do well.

I am one of the 10 million people who acquired an iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus ten days ago. Coming from Planet Android, I wasnt as put off by the larger dimensions as everyone else in the technosphere seemed to be. But I was, as usual, put off by one thing that both the Apple product and its archnemesis from Google shared: the unpocketability of the phone, particularly by females.
This isnt a new problem for women. Our skinny jeans have pockets, but there is no way an object bigger than a standard issue ID card fits in the front, and everyone knows that slipping a phone in your back pocket is an invitation for a treacherous dive into a toilet, or a backflip resulting in heartbreaking shatters. Purses have enclosures that were once suitable for the flip phone generation but have since become too snug for newer models. Throwing it into the main compartment seems risky, at best. But the biggest problem might be the lack of pockets in the first place: women's slacks, dresses, and blazers often have no pockets, or worse, fake pockets that serve no utilitarian purpose besides sartorially leading the wearer on to believe they have a handy wardrobe aide, until its too late.
So how can an industry that focuses on womenwhether it be models or products created primarily for a female demographicconsistently dodge the very people it markets to? Why are the pockets in women's pants so small? May 31, 2018

Why do boys' jeans have bigger pockets than girls'? Oct 24, 2017
Women's Fashion and Style: Why do girls' jeans have smaller ... Mar 29, 2016
So it's obviously an issue. And how do you explain the lack of pockets in many blazers? Blazers certainly aren't all "casual wear". They are designed to take "casual" (pants, skirt, or dress) up a notch to just below a formal suit. You have to almost go to a full-on suit jacket just to maybe get a 3" deep pocket.
This is not to say that women aren't interested in "fashion" but there should be some "function" in there too... not just "window dressing" junk with fake pockets. Women are often made fun of digging in a pocketbook to pull out a ringing cell phone and endlessly buying "organizer" bags gets tiresome when a simple deep pocket will do.

Did you actually view the answers to the questions you posed in my link? As far as I can tell she is confirming what I said in my original post. Especially the last one.
Just one more thing. One question by one person, and one answer by one person doesn't really show an obvious concern buy a lot of women though that may be the case. One question asked by one person with a multitude of replies would make a much better case.

The bottom line was this -
So how can an industry that focuses on womenwhether it be models or products created primarily for a female demographicconsistently dodge the very people it markets to? Camilla Olson, creative director of an eponymous high tech fashion firm, points to inherent sexism within the industry. I.e., the industry itself is male-dominated. And when it comes to regular women's clothing, NOT high-falutin' runway model Melania-wearing stuff - just regular every day wear, you have to hunt for items with sufficient numbers and types of pockets. For men, they just go in the store, find the size and color and fit and out they go. Pockets are assumed and it doesn't raise a 2nd thought because it is an expected part of the clothing.
At this point, continually making women's slacks and skirts without pockets is like making men's briefs without the crotch flap. It changes the whole dynamic of how you go about your business.
quickesst
(6,280 posts).... and I have never used the crotch flap in my life.
The bottom line is men have a much easier time with clothing. I really do not understand why a pair of pants for a woman can't have a pocket at least large enough for a cell phone. Seems a simple process to me to incorporate that type of pocket without taking anything away from the fashion.
Speaking for myself, being male, I personally cannot stand to have crap bulging out of my pockets. I'll even hang my car keys on my back pocket or just carry them rather than having them bulging out of my front pockets although there is plenty of room for them. Think I'll probably bail out of this thread now, and I wish you good luck with the pants.

Dont you give yourself a hysterectomy when you bend over? Or smash it by sitting on it if its in the back? Im a purse person. Id need clown pants to fit everything I like to carry into pockets. Be Prepared!

(9,527 posts)I'm so pocket dependent, I find even wearing jeans to be restrictive as I want to keep my phone, ipod (I'm a music freak and my music collection won't fit on my phone) and keys/pocketknife/chapstick/coins in separate pockets. All of my work pants and shorts are cargo for that very reason.

I am a 61 year old fat guy, and I don't put anything in my pockets. I carry a bag that I got from the Women's purse aisle at WalMart for $10. Guess that makes it a "murse".

No one would ever try to sell a man a pair of pants w/o pockets. But somehow it's OK to do it to women, after all women don't want to look fat.
Rather, let's give them a bag/handbag/clutch that they have to watch over whenever they leave the house. Oh, and let's make some of those bag status symbols.
Please forget the fact that the bag is nothing more than a ball-and-chain.
