Post a line or 2 from a novel & see if anyone knows what novel it's from without using Google

Last edited Thu Oct 25, 2018, 03:20 PM - Edit history (2)

1) (song taken from a novel) "A mother's love is a blessing, no matter where you roam..Keep her while you have her, you'll miss her when she's gone"

2) "There was something in that lake that was not of this world...A color, indescribable, outside the spectrum, impressed itself upon the eyes and minds of all who approached"

3) "This is a nervous little decade we're playing with" ('60s novel)

4) "I could hear everything, together with the hum of the hotel neon...I never felt sadder in my life....L.A. is the loneliest and most brutal of American cities"

5) "It was a good ward this time, one of the best he and Dunbar had ever enjoyed" (answered)

6) "Gnossos cruising meanwhile in the back of a charcoal gray four-passenger Aston Martin,
wedged between two freshman football heroes with android heads..mouths mumbling in taut athletic fashion as if they had unopened Brazil nuts packing their cheeks" (answered)

7) "We spent the next six hours in a tiny concrete cell with about twenty Puerto Ricans.
We couldn't sit down because they had pissed all over the floor, so we stood in the
middle of the room, giving out cigarettes like representatives of the Red Cross"

The author's work "overlaps the science fiction and fantasy genres, e.g. thematic use of demons and aliens that act as endoparasites."

#2 reminds me of "The Fall of the House of Usher," but that's a short story, not a novel.

#7 sounds as if it could have come from "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas."

The author of # 2 was a colorful guy, born in L.A.,..then moved to the San Francisco Bay Area and had a variety of occupations before becoming successful as a writer.

His jobs included:
- Language Instructor
- Construction laborer
- Night clerk in a Mission District flophouse
