Funny town/place names near you?

Last edited Fri Oct 12, 2018, 08:52 PM - Edit history (2)

Last night the remnants of Michael came through here.
Wall to wall meteorologists on the local stations. Preempting normal programming. My wife and I crack up watching fellow meteorologists on the same station muscling for air time and often interrupting each other's train of thought.

Anyway, I knew about Bumpass Va. But until last night I wasn't familiar with Mannboro (MAN! BORO) or Ballsville.

We used to drive through it on our Roanoke trips. About 5 miles west of the sign signifying the geographical center of Virginia - where 24 breaks off 60.

TOGA! ✊🏼

Why I introduced my daughter to that I have no idea. Toga has a volunteer fire department ....and that's about it.

I've probably been through Dooms. Hadn't noticed it.

Originally named Hot Springs, it changed its name in 1950 so that the radio quiz show with that name would come to town and broadcast from there. Apparently, from what I read in Wikipedia, Ralph Edwards, the host of the show, came to town once a year for the next 50 years.

I sometimes wonder if residents have problems filling out forms that only allow so many spaces or characters for your town's name.
