I've been sober for almost three months. But now I'm a junkie!

An ice cream junkie, that is. I need to have a mug full of ice cream every evening before bed. The way I figure it is, it's a lot less harmful to me and my relationship with my wife and family.

Give me a hot bath every night for a week and I need one the next night too. I have been absolutely jonesing on a need for a bath. I had a surgery and I can only take showers for 3 months and I am in agony!

It's good that you can see your addictive self! Go you!

When you give up alcohol, it's common to crave sweets. It's rough in the beginning. I remember my doctor asking me how I was doing with the alcohol and I told him I was no longer drinking, but I was addicted to Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. That gets better, too.

When I quit drinking in June I went on a 10 day green smoothie fast.

Usually a banana, pineapple, kale and some other fruit.

Lots of sugar but tied to fiber so my blood sugar was stable.

I drank about three a day and "lost' 10 pounds. Mostly water, I imagine!

A lot more than Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, LOL. I also remember comparing notes with someone else new to recovery and we both kept track of the "flavors of the week" at the local ice cream/convenience store chain. You've done much better than I did - I went from barely eating and being seriously underweight to gaining quite a bit, no big surprise. These days I try to eat more fruit instead, too. Good luck and good for you!

If you are open to it, consider cross-posting in Addiction & Recovery Forum. Someone out there might be struggling to go a day and seeing that others can do it sends a positive message of hope and strength.

habits. Here a clue too: if you get off most sugar and starches, strawberries and clementines and blueberries taste better than ice cream. Use frozen wild blueberries heated up in steel cut oats and yogurt. After about 10 days of no processed starches or sugars...the yummyness of fruits is amazing.

I don't think that's overdoing it. Not compared to the calories I consumed drinking.

Your body is craving sugar. Just be careful. You don't want diabetes. That's what I was told almost 18 years ago when I got sober, (12/07/2000). It was hot chocolate and candy bars for me. Who am I kidding, it was everything sweet!

Honestly I thought smoking and drinking coffee was a prerequisite for AA. They used to have a "some are sicker then others," room, yeah the smoking room. That's where I learned the best response about stopping, "My higher power will remove my vices in the order to which they will kill me." Still sober. No more smoking rooms these days, state law. Which is fine, I always prefer smoking outside anyway.

I haven't had a drink in 40 years. I haven't had a cigarette in about 20 years. I don't miss the alcohol anymore, but I really miss the cigarettes.
