Here is a fun exercise that stems from a conversation I had with a student. We were discussing how many people lived in the Denver metro area (2.8 million). That's a lot of people. How many of them do you think you can meet in a lifetime?
I teach at the community college, so I have the opportunity to meet a lot of people. But let's see how it breaks down.
Suppose 20 students per class X 6 classes per year (the maximum number I can have) X 10 years = 1,200 people (class sizes can be a lot smaller, so I'm just going to use this number for the purpose of my argument).
So in ten years, I have met approximately 0.04% of the Denver metro population!
28,000 = 1%, so at the rate of 1,200 people every 10 years, it would take me 230 years to meet 1% of the population I am a part of.
I don't know if this makes me want to get out more or just crawl under the bed and hide.
What percentage of your town/city/metropolis' population do you think you meet in a lifetime?
