The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsMy mother said her name today.
This means she's still there, starting the long road back to her feisty self.
Four days ago, two weeks from turning 96, she had a "big stroke" (the doctors' name for it). I'm in Baton Rouge, down from Cambridge, sleeping in her room. I've brought up the Andrews Sisters on YouTube, I've sung Que Sera Sera in her face, I've put a pad and pen in her lap and she's written random letters and numbers.
She just had her first session with the speech therapist, who knows Mom was a jitterbug star so she said we should play music and sing. I said we'd sing for her, and I put my face to Mom's and we sang the Que Sera Sera chorus. Her words were just sounds but those sounds were on key.
Dance, sing, live.

My grandmother would come out of her alzheimers fog when I would sing gospel songs to her - you could tell it was emotional for her to grasp those threads of joy from her life that were otherwise hidden from her.
Keep it up.

(2,839 posts)I wish you and your mom the very best. Is she at OLOL? Good people there. They really took good care of my mom before she passed about 3 years ago.
If you get hungry go to Po-Boy Express on Siegen Ln. Get the roast beef w/provolone, mayonnaise and gravy (not bbq sauce). You'll never forget it. A bit messy but, best sandwich ever.
