If I get scared half to death today and again five years from now, I will have had plenty of time for my nerves to recover so in the end, I'm still only scared half to death. Adrenaline actually (normally) subsides within an hour or so.

However, if I get scared half to death by a bullet whizzing past my head and then a second shot does the same a second later, then I'm scared 3/4 to death - at least for a while.
