Advice needed about luggage and a 15 hour layover

The layover is in hong kong. Does anyone know if I check it will it remain with the airliine and travel on my 2 flights? Or, will they send it along to my 3rd airport on the next available flight, meaning it will arrive 15 hours before me and be spinning around the arrival carousel for 15 hours waiting for my plane to arrive?

Advice??

I can carry it on and then put it in a hong kong airport locker.

1. I would ask the airline this, if I were you.

My understanding is that the airline will carry your checked baggage onto the next flights.

I do not know if they send it on without you being on that flight.

2. If your luggage gets to the airport well in advance of you, it doesn't just spin around.

They generally keep it in a secured area, or in a locked room and then you need to show your tag to get it. I would check with the airline to make sure that the airport you're ultimately going to has a secure facility for this, but I've had this happen many times, and I go find all the luggage that's been in the airport for a while.

It's probably good to check with the airline anyway, because in my experience, if they know you're aware that there may be a problem, they'll take a little extra care.

Second, my understanding is checked bags are always carried in your plane.
But best check with the airline.

4. The general rule is that the luggage travels with the passenger.

Sometimes the baggage handlers screw up and put a bag on the wrong plane, but that's almost never intentional.

This is a story of intentional mis-handling of luggage. Back in the 1960s and '70s, when Donald Nyrop was President of Northwest Orient Airlines, he was so universally hated by the employees, that when he was travelling on his own airline, the ticket agent would put the correct destination tag on his suitcase, but when the baggage agents sorting the bags to put on airplanes, they'd see his name tag, and simply put it on some other flight. When it got off in the wrong city, those agents would likewise notice the name and put the suitcase on yet another flight somewhere else.

I understood that eventually he had to put a fake name on his ID tag.

I used to work alongside the Northwest Counter at DCA in this time frame, and heard about it more than once.

But for the most part, the vast majority of airline employees are honest and diligent and do their best to put the bags on the flights they should be on.

5. check with your airline.

Did you book the entire trip at once, in one ticket series from A-C or did you book A-B one day, and looked around to find a reasonable fare from B-C on a different airline? if it's the first option you should be golden, but its better to check..

cause if it's different airlines, depending on who they have agreements with, you might have to pick up your luggage during the connection.. So you would check with the airline and they would be able to tell you if it will check all the way though..

So basically, call your airline

10. do you mean one internet booking, and then one airline you called to book?

if that's the case then yes, you need to call them. The agent on the phone can tell you if you will be able to check your bags to the destination, or if you will have to pick up at the connection.

out of curiosity, how much did the 15 hour lay over save you over then just letting the airline's reservation agent take a few minutes to price out a few different connections?

That way, people drop the same money on the island. Smart when you think of it. I'll probably never go to that side of the globe again, so, might as well get a taste!

6. Thought checked luggage had to be matched to a ticketed passenger on a flight.

That prevents somebody from sending a bomb on a flight.

however baggage that is misplaced by the airline still needs to go on other flights otherwise there would be a ton of free tickets to Peoria to personally pick up misguided luggage.

Regulations prohibit an airline from knowingly transporting luggage without a passenger across international borders. Standard operating procedure is to match luggage with passengers during the boarding and loading processes. If a passenger is not on the plane, grounds crew will “offload” their luggage.
