(41,762 posts)(Probably due to climate change) It barely rains here at winter time.. it does get windy and lately there has been a lot of grass fires.. up on the hills of Oakland.

(2,959 posts)toured the Pampanito the day after it opened. I started the tour with a couple of Pentagon officials and vets who, when I mentioned my Dad's sub service insisted I accompany them. We crawled all over that ship, spending about four hours total. I've taken a few people there over the years but never have been able to ignore restrictions as we did that day.
IF you're in SF skip Fisherman's waft and head to the National Matiime Park, it's one of the few tourist attractions that isn't a rip off

Boy howdy, he was blown away when it was transferred to the government and he became a GS 15 employee overnight; he was in high cotton

(12,485 posts)If you can't make it to the west coast, when on the Philly waterfront, visit an identical Balao class boat, the Becuna (SS-319).
I spent 3 days slamming off 70 foot waves into the troughs southeast of Bermuda. We re-invented the term sea sickness and dry heaving on that trip.

(36,214 posts)The SS Jeremiah O'Brien is one of two remaining fully functional Liberty ships of the 2,710 built and launched during World War II. The O'Brien has the distinction of being the last unaltered Liberty ship and remains historically accurate. Moored at Pier 45, Fisherman's Wharf, she is a premier San Francisco attraction.
Granted the USS Pampanito is front loaded with bling, but the SS Jeremiah O'Brien has a lot to offer for the mechanical inclined: STEAM!
Where else can you examine a fully functional 'Old School' Triple expansion engine, or follow all the steam pipes to see what they do.
I remember seeing it steam every Memorial day.
