My beloved Zaphod passed away suddenly in January at age 13 1/2 leaving his sister Trillian an only cat. We decided being a single cat household was not acceptable to today we adopted Autumn and Winter. They are 9 months old but were found as 6 month old kittens so they are really skittish. Autumn will let me pick her up but Winter is mostly to scared to let me come near her (I've managed to pet her a few times and she loves it but it is hard to get close).

(5,012 posts)And she is a little purr ball - whenever I pet her she just starts purring like mad (Winter does too but that has only happened once or twice).
You can't see it but she has a super cute line of white running up almost the center of her chin.

(5,012 posts)Autumn and Winter because Autumn looks like fall colors and Winter looks like fall colors with a dusting of snow!

(18,622 posts)Be patient. Sit on the floor at her level. Talk quietly. Maybe have some string to coax her.
Get some meat baby food and use your fingertip to tempt her.
Best of luck. It can be done!
The biggest problem right now is that Autumn gets in the way. But Autumn is finally getting more comfortable with the rest of the house so I'm going to work on Winter in a room with a closed door while Autumn is elsewhere!
She loves the Laxatone gel stuff and that's how I've often coaxed her close (this morning I did manage to pet her when I fed her).

(17,252 posts)My dad will only adopt calicos and can only tolerate long hairs so when I saw these two on the adoption site I said these are the ones! My dad will love them when he visits and will be able to tolerate them better than Trillian (who is shorthair).

(15,805 posts)I've gentled lots of feral kittens in my time. Most quickly settled in to the family and behaved very nicely, a couple took a little longer and had their limits about what they would tolerate.
My two little beasties are about 8 now, and came from a feral litter in a neighbor's barn. You'd never know they weren't born spoiled and pampered divas. They follow me everywhere, complaining until I sit down again and let them join me.
When they first arrived, I hand fed them for about two days in the begining, starting with baby food in a spoon, then they licked food from my finger, and finally they ate from a dish next to me. When they were eager to come to me, and I sat on the floor doling out little bits of food so they always associated me with good food, grooming and warm cuddles.

(5,012 posts)but not acting out (still eating, using the litter box).
I've been keeping them separate for the most part but Trillian just met Winter on the stairs (2 steps away as Trillian came around the corner) and there was copious hissing and growling from her (not Winter). If she never adjusts, the house is big enough that they never have to interact - if I can convince my husband we could even make the bedroom half of the upstairs hers (4 1/2 rooms) and let Autumn and Winter have the rest of the house. Trillian spends 90% of her time up there now, anyway. I'm hoping she'll become queen bee, though.

(1,724 posts)Lucky you for finding these beautiful kitties!
It will take time for them to adjust, I know.
I adopted a kitty almost 3 years ago and finally the hissing/growling/etc. is begging to stop!
It takes patience and lots of love but I can tell you have that to give!
Thank you for adopting these lovely cats!
Good job!! !!

(5,012 posts)Autumn has adopted me but Winter is still on the fence This evening she got jealous of the head rubbing her sister was getting and let me touch her head - there's hope!
