I never watched it. I don't care about the characters and the plot. I'm sick of hearing about it. And no, I don't click on the threads that mention it.

(15,682 posts)literally last week. Apparently I suffer a deplorable lack of curiosity.
I only watched about 5 minutes of one episode (smack-dab in the middle of the show) probably 3 years ago.
I could see that it had promise as far as being something I might watch given the chance to start at the beginning. That's how I saw "Lost". I binge-watched starting with season 1, episode 1, about a year after it ended.

(33,643 posts)At first when I read the OP I was worried I was going to decide I actually didn't love the show (overall, esp. the first 5 seasons) since OP wasn't interested, but then I got over it, and turns out, I still consider it time well spent. Glad I watched it. Enjoyed the hell out of it. PHEW!
Was it PC? HELL NO it wasn't. Not even close.
And that's part of what made it great.
The only parts I really could've done without was the Ramsey/Theon scenes, ummm ... early in their relationship.
Other than that I thought it was the perfect level of grit and realism.

(6,261 posts)But for some reason, everybody who doesn't watch the show really feels the need to tell the rest of us about not watching it. Every Guardian (for example) forum discussing the episodes has several people in it whose only contribution is to say they don't watch it.
And that is something I haven't really encountered before.

(33,643 posts)The first four episodes, and girded yourself that there would be T&A, and women would be treated as objects a lot of the time (like things were in real-life medieval times) esp. in the early going of the show, and there'd be some gory deaths, and a smattering of non-graphic rapes (most of them are like, a torn shirt and 'no no stop' and maybe a scream, and then you know what happened) ... oh, and two incestuous characters ... and didn't try to judge it with 2019 sensibilities for all the characters ... you'd end up sucked in like the rest of us.
Just sayin, I'm pretty damn discerning with my TV time, I don't watch crap. GoT was a friggin quality show. Acting was fantastic for a TV show.

(153,113 posts)it sickened me
mr_lebowski
(33,643 posts)And none of it (on a show like GoT) is actually real, ya know?
I'd not want to see many many many things IRL I've seen in movies and TV, but when I know it's fake, in service of a story ... very little bothers me.
Some people I guess perceive things differently, with a little less 'stomach' for gritty stuff. I'd say if you can handle your average Scorsese movie, or the Sopranos, you should be able to roll with GoT.
Pretty sure you didn't, in fact, watch the first four episodes ... I find that once one becomes invested in stories and characters, it becomes a bit easier to get through uncomfortable scenes ... but whatevs, all good

(6,831 posts)It was reported just this week, that in Siberia, the perfectly preserved head of a wolf was discovered poking through the tundra ice. It's been dated to 40,000 years ago. It is larger than our current canis lupus, with exponentially powerful jaws, likely with enough strength or PSI to crush the bones of a mastodon or large mammal.
Never watched GoT. Way too much gratuitous violence, savage inhumanity, and deranged misogyny for us. But as far as ratings go, it seems to be very popular. Much like StarWars/Star Trek groupies (or Trekkies) and they have conventions, their own languages (Anyone here speak Klingon ?) and get all snazzed up as their favorite characters. They look like they're having fun and they're not getting into any trouble, so let them have at it. Maybe a better way for people to meet one another than on dating apps. Maybe we'll get themed restaurants out of it. That would be a hoot.

(6,831 posts)Wolf-dogs hybrids are a bad idea. They bring forth the worst genetic qualities in each.
I'm a supporter of a shelter here in WA, in Tenino, called Wolf Haven International. They are the only wolf shelter in the US to have been awarded the highest international honor for such shelters. The have some hybrids, but these animals have been screened thoroughly and make good companions for some of the pairs.
It's sad that popular movies/TV often create sudden markets for pet "mills" and unscrupulous breeders for certain animals.

(33,643 posts)Shows almost always become critical and popular phenomenons when they're actually good ... stuff like Sopranos, Breaking Bad, The Wire, GoT ... it doesn't happen by accident.
Sure, sometimes absolute CRAP becomes popular with the public, like Jersey Shore, Duck Dynasty, and the Bachelor, but that doesn't mean they're good shows.

1) People lying to each other, or
2) Ostensibly smart people failing to recognize obvious misunderstandings, and set them straight, before calamity ensued.
Not to mention the two lead characters, the brothers, were annoyingly pompous egomaniacs, especially Frazier.
Their dad, Daphne, and Raj (sp?) were the only thing that made that show remotely watchable ... and DHP did a great Niles, acting-wise.

(838 posts)Youtube keeps insisting on showing me ads for the GoT video game or something, probably because I'm searching out The Expanse videos and that always ends up being described as the "GoT of space shows." (A description I resent, btw, but I'll take it if it gets more people watching an actual quality show.)
I've had friends try to get me into Game of Thrones, but the moment I see it's Western European-based fantasy, I'm bored. That setting is easy-mode because a writer doesn't have to explain too much of the worldbuilding. If one wants to spark my interest, give me a GoT like show but set maybe somewhere in pre-European contact Micronesia with cultural traditions and storytelling tropes set in that time. Or any place that's not Europe-like, really.

(806 posts)same level of ubiquitous cultural impact that shows in the Big 3 networks era had. For example, until very recently when I finally started watching it, I couldn't have told you the names of any of the characters on "Game of Thrones" or the names of any of the actors in it - in contrast, back in the 1980s, I didn't ever watch a show like "Dynasty" - a glitzy, over the top soap opera was not my kind of show - but because it was a top 10 show in the Big 3 networks era, I certainly knew a lot more about it than I did about "Game of Thrones" - I knew who was in it (John Forsythe, Joan Collins, Linda Evans, etc) and the names of the main characters, etc.
