UM insurance vs uim coverage: Someone smarter than me tell me which I want.

The language is circular, but not clear.

I think it means:

If I choose underinsured, that covers me in either case? uninsured and underinsured? Yes?

But if I choose the simple uninsured, UM, bills could exceed the limits of someone's coverage and I'm sol.

Have I got that right? So, I want the conversion to uim, which is everything and both, right???

BTW: For this, I want as much as I can buy: The difference is a couple bucks.

In Florida we call both uninsured and underinsured insurance UM. I see I Ohio they call it all UIM.

in Florida UM covers you for injuries only. If you are hit by someone uninsured it covers you. If you are hit by someone with not enough insurance your UM is excess to their coverage. If they have 10 bodily injury, and you have 50 UM , your total coverage is 60k.

This coverage only applies if the other driver is at fault for the accident and includes hit and run drivers who are considered “uninsured” since you can’t find them. UM also kicks in if you are hit by a self-insured vehicle.

In other states, UM may be offset, rather than added on top of the other person’s coverage. So if they have 10k and you have 50k, you get 10k plus 40 k for only total of 5ok.

Ask a lawyer or insurance adjuster or agent in your state. Make sure they handle auto claims and not just commercial business claims. Auto adjusters/ attorneys are more familiar with nuts and bolts of auto coverage.
