I had seen the commercial and thought, "How sad, another sellout." Then yesterday I gave a ride to my granddaughter's 14-year-old friend. He sat in the front seat beside me and started whispering a tune to himself... "Hello darkness my old friend..."
Me: Oh! Are you a Simon and Garfunkel fan?
Him: Whuut?
Me: The song! Sound of Silence! It's their song.
Him: Um...ok, no, I heard a commercial...
Me: Here, I'll tell Siri to play it, it's on my phone.
So we listened to Simon and Garfunkel. And I smiled and held back a tear.

(15,536 posts)My very first car was a used VW Beetle - I think it was a 1963. I didn't own many record albums but I sure did own Simon and Garfunkle and played it over and over again. At this stage in my life I truly get nostalgic for so many things. Music can take you back to a simpler time when you were young and had your whole life ahead of you and the sky's the limit. I too get teary like you.

They play the "Flintstones" music while describing old gas engines, and the "Jetsons" theme when they describe their electric cars.

(54,330 posts)I told them it had been a huge hit for a local woman back where I grew up (D.C. area) a quarter century earlier, and they thought I was making it up just to irk them. "Roberta Flack? Who in the world is THAT?"
Who, indeed?
