Retail pet peeve:

When the cashier reviews the price with you, and then mentions the sales tax as being "for the governor". It annoys me that they act like sales tax is some kind of personal slush fund for the state governor, instead of how the state pays for public works in the absence of a state income tax.

That sounds obnoxious to say the least. We don’t have a sales tax...but do have income tax...AND terribly high tax on our vehicle license plates. What do these rubes think pays for roads, bridges etc?

Ask them how they magically get to and from work everyday. Give them something to think about, take your items, receipt, and leave.

I actually have done this before, but it has not happened to me often.

I actually haven't heard it for a while. But the worst offender was a manager I had when I was working in a bookstore a number of years (decades, actually) ago. He was kind of an arrogant jerk. He boasted about being a reserve police officer (I don't know if those two things go together).

His thing was: "All right, that's $15.99, and $3.98 for the governor..."

Even then, it struck me as kind of a douche thing to say. I was apolitical back then, but looking back, his actions strike me as right-wing anti-government.

I learned you play taxes for a civil society. And the more you make the more they take. One year I made $180,000 and had to pay $13,000 in taxes. Though my hand was shaking while writing that check to the IRS I knew it was my civic duty.

Always thought of it as a little saying that took a little edge off saying 'sales tax' or 'taxes.'
Never thought it could irritate somebody.

I am much more irritated by stores pushing the customer to do their own checkout. I will do so when they pay me. Until then I am sure that is a job someone could fill.

It doesn't offend me. What offends me is that to some governors/elected officials it IS a slush fund!

I'm always shocked when they mention a sales tax. I should be used to it by now, but I live in NH where there is no sales tax. (I wish we had one so we could "dress the place up" a little.

that roads, and police and schools, etc. actually cost money and that the people who make those things happen also have families to feed.
