(10,440 posts)To Jerry, it is all music and it is all worth playing. The guy played it all from the Deep jazz of Ornette Coleman to bluegrass. He played with Ruben Blades, David Murray and Vassar Clements. He also covered the great American songbook as well as anyone ever has.

(11,833 posts)have you heard his Ode to Bobby Zimmerman (on Hunky Dory)?
So many great artists are influenced by others, who I then learn about & admire too. I'm glad there isn't only one musical artist.
When I listen to Bowie, it also gets me interested again in listening to Roxy Music, Brian Eno, Mott the Hoople, T Rex, philly soul, and so much more!

Glad you found that song! I love all of Hunky Dory. Bob Dylan was a huge influence on David Bowie.

so, I would add:
Ludwig van Beethoven
Louis Armstrong
Charlie Parker
Chuck Berry

(13,661 posts)The rest I have no idea (if I had a choice of 5).
Probably Ray Charles, B.B. King, Bonnie Raitt, k.d. lang - anyone with a gorgeous, emotive voice.

(27,247 posts)Brandenburg Concerto #3, final movement. One of the all-time greatest pieces of music. Before that, Sonata for Harpsichord and Viola da Gumba in g minor, 1st movement. Perhaps Glenn Gould and Leonard Rose gave the most powerful performance of this latter piece, with Gould on the piano and Rose on the cello.

(21,046 posts)A lovely song by the author of the famous opera "I Pagliacci" (The Clowns).
Domingo is much better in his old age than Pavarotti was. Pavarotti was a great tenor in the 1970s but by the time he turned into a pop star, he had one volume level and that was "blast" or triple fortissimo.
