Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsLooking for tall cup that won't tip over (easily) - and NOT the suction-cup kind.
We tried the suction-cup type that is marketed under various names, and while they work well on absolutely smooth surfaces, they do nothing on the slightly rough surface of our nightstands, which is where the tip-resistant feature is most needed.
So... Does anyone know of a tall (like a travel mug) type of cup that has, perhaps, a base that is slightly wider than the top rim - just a little something to keep the center of gravity from getting past the tipping point all the time? Most travel mugs are narrow at the bottom, the better to fit into various sized cup holders; we, however, are sort of looking for the opposite.

(70,076 posts)larger vessels would be known as ship's decanters. there is probably a name for this sort of shape in a mug or cup, but i dont know it.
but very common in hand thrown pottery.

(15,805 posts)Used them for more than 10 years, both the travel mugs that fit in your car and the wide footprint style with the handle. They are durable, dishwasher safe and come in several sizes, colors and styles. The base is nonskid so it stays put.

I use the smaller mug pictured on the left. They are insulated and keeps the temp for several hours for hot or cold beverages, my iced tea stays cold well over 8 hours. The lid screws on tight and you can either drink from the opening or use a straw, and there's a tab to close the opening to keep out dust or bugs if you're outdoors.
I really like the handle for a good grip, especially useful if you're trying to get a drink when you're still half asleep, or your hands are wet. Plus it makes it easier to carry as it's too wide to get a good grip for me.

(12,807 posts)... It's the "standard" sleek travel mug, but it most definitely insulates!
Thanks!

We have a couple of them. They are nice and hold a drink's temperature quite well.
What you described reminded me of some German beer steins I've seen with a flared bottom.

(12,807 posts)This might fill the bill!
Yes, I was thinking of a flare on the bottom, just something to make tipping it over *difficult.* Obviously, a pillow could still bump a cup over, so a lid would be nice, too.
These look like they might work since at least they're not *narrower* on the bottom like what she's using now. All of our big-enough cups also taper towards the bottom, which is kind of a hazard for indoor use.

(14,489 posts)The ones I have are 3-1/2 inches diameter at the bottom and the straws have a little ring near the bottom that prevents them from popping out if the thing falls over, which would minimize spills (look closely at the photo I sent and you can see the ring).
The lid has a nice silicon gasket to further minimize spills and leaks.
You could even glue a larger ring of some sort to the bottom of the jar to make it even more hard to topple. If the ring was made of rubber, that would prevent it from slipping around on your table.
Best of luck!.....
