Ok I can't prove it. It is a basic Southern Cole Slaw recipe & I may have found the basic recipe on the web and suited it to taste. So it may have been common & not just my Maw Maw's.
But when I had been sick for 3 days & she brought me some-it was a miracle worker. Crispy & sweet / tart it is my comfort food maybe just because of the memory.
Some people like it-some not. If you like the KFC version try this.
It is simple.
----
One head of cabbage shredded & 1 grated carrot (small). or 2 bags of slaw mix.
-------
1/3 cup sugar
1/4 cup milk
1/2 cup mayo
1/4 cup buttermilk
1 Tbs Mustard (yellow for tart honey for sweet)
1 1/2 Tbs Apple Cider Vinegar
1 1/2 Tbs Lemon juice (Pineapple juice for sweet)
3 Tbs fine chop Yellow Onion
1/2 Tsp Salt
1 Tsp Pepper
4+ Tbs Cranberry Raisins chopped
1 Pineapple round slice chopped fine
Mix ingredients thoroughly & blend into the slaw mix.

(25,816 posts)It's adapted from an on-line recipe I found.
Ingredients
1 medium head cabbage, shredded
1 large carrot, shredded
1 medium yellow pepper, chopped
1 medium sweet red pepper, chopped
1 medium green pepper chopped
1 apple peeled and chopped
raisins (optional)
unsalted sunflower seeds, other small nut (optional)
Celery seed
Ground black pepper
DRESSING:
½ cup half and half
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1/2 cup sugar
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 tablespoon vinegar
Directions
1. In a large bowl, combine the first seven ingredients. Generously add celery seed and ground pepper. Combine dressing ingredients until smooth. Pour over vegetables; toss to coat. Cover and refrigerate overnight. Stir before serving.
Its my opinion that this recipe calls for too much sugar. So start with a quarter cup and add a tablespoon at a time until it reaches the sweetness you like.
What I really like is the combination of flavors: sweet, tart, sharp. I fix this sometimes to serve at the homeless shelter I do volunteer work at, and it's extremely popular. People especially like the apple.

A substitute for buttermilk is acidified milk
"Add one tablespoon lemon juice or white vinegar to a liquid measuring cup, and add enough milk until it measures 1 cup. Stir, and let sit for five minutes before using. This buttermilk replacement can also be replicated with non-dairy milks."
