(3,191 posts)I went with my 19 year old babysitter, fucking mind blowing. I named my youngest son Ian, I have loved Anderson forever.

(15,318 posts)at St John's Arena. Awesome show. Loved the Stand Up album. It was like one of those pop-up cards. Open the album and the band popped up.
My two daughters used to borrow my M.U. Best Of CD. When they were in Middle School, I took them to see JT at our Virginia Beach Amphitheatre... the Chieftain opened for them.
My girls have been Tull fans for a long time.
Just an amazing band... especially live.

(64,989 posts)Saw them twice. Once at the giant gym at the largest HS in home town. (Maybe 4,000 folks with floor loaded with chairs)
Other point: Martin Barre is one of rock's unsung guitar heroes! Wonderful player. Think of solo on Aqualung! Plenty of clever guitar tricks, but we can pretty much sing the solo. That's some skill!

(15,318 posts)Don't know why he's rarely mentioned in the "best rock guitarist" lists.
His work on Stand Up and Songs From the Wood is virtuoso stuff.

(2,228 posts)Benefit is my favorite Tull album. I saw them at Hampton Roads Colosseum in the early seventies.
I saw Carlos Santana at St. John's Arena also in the early seventies.
I don't know if this is common knowledge, I only learned of it in the last ten years or so. But, Hotel California by the Eagles, is very similar to "We used to know", from Tull's Stand Up album. I saw an interview with Ian Anderson. He said that the two groups had toured together and it wasn't too much later that Hotel California came out. He acknowledged the similarity, but didn't seem to care very much.
This strikes me as funny because around the same time, (at least in my mind!), some people associated with the old band Spirit were trying to sue Led Zeppelin for the the chord progression used in Stairway to Heaven! Personally, I always liked Spirit more than Zeppelin, but that was a stretch!
Merry Christmas!
