A therapy dog named Ben who works for a Massachusetts police department is being dogged with allegations hes a thief.
......
When Ben saw the toys, he thought they all belonged to him,(Deputy Chief) Mill told the station.
After officers caught Ben carrying a baby doll in its carrier by the handle, he attempted to out run them.
However, he ended up leading the crack investigators back to his bed under a desk where they found a complete stash of goodies, all covered with slobber.
Officers wont be able to donate those extra-juicy playthings to kids, so the toys were replaced.
Dont expect Ben to do any time for his crime: Officers said he probably wont be charged with theft, but he has been permanently banned from the toy room.

(21,432 posts)On his 2nd Xmas with us, when he was just a couple months past a year old, he was so eager to watch us open gifts that we felt guilty that we had not bought him any. We just did not think he would understand what it was about, but we were obviously wrong.
So my sister and I quickly wrapped some luncheon meat from the fridge in discarded wrsppibg paper and gave it to him. He tore open the paper, ate the treat and seemed happy. He wanted to be part of what was going on.
Every year after that, we put wrapped doggy toys and treats for him under the tree with our gifts, in his own separate pile. We pointed to his pile and said his name so he knew it was his. He was an exceptionally well behaved dog and did not try to open them until the time when we all started opening gifts. Before that moment, if anyone touched his pile of gifts, he barked and stood guard over them.
When we started opening gifts, we pointed to his, said his name, and then said, "ok." He tore open the paper of each one until they were all open. Then he carried a treat package to one of us to open the box for him to have some.
He was one of the most easily trained dogs I've known and always seemed to feel that he was one of us, part of our 'pack.'

(21,432 posts)So loyal to us. And smart. Learned everyone's name and the names of objects so that he would get anythibg we asked for and bring it to us. My father used to give him my sister's allowance and tell him to take it to her. Same for me. He would find where we were and deliver it.
My sister and I taught him all kinds of things and he was always so eager to please that he learned quickly.
He was not pedigreed. We got him as a puppy from the Humane Society. But the lab traits were very noticeable in the shape of his face and head, his ears, his body, and fur, and his behavior. Just a little smaller than most labs. We fell in love with that face and soulful eyes the minute we saw him.
