Before I start this, I really and truly want to thank Juju for keeping me company on twitter all though this past month from Hospital to Rehab. I have no family locally and she managed to stay in touch with me the entire time, I really appreciate it, Sis! I gave her a more detailed account some off which will stay between us...but I will mention a few things..
I also want to Publicly thank UCSF and SF Fire for saving my life. We really have great Hospitals here in San Francisco and both are just the best.
To begin,.... I been having heart and kidney problems for about 10 years but it was the very worst this time, with the culpert being Salt and Sodium (Which is in every fucking thing!) I had been here before but not as bad as this. Trouble breathing as liquid from my heart spilled into my lungs..and at first I didn't want to go but, I called 911 and they sent SF fire with an Ambulance, so by that time I was sitting down, I couldn't even get up to answer the door, for the Paramedics to get in, but some how they managed to get in, put me on a Gurney and whisked me into the Ambulance.
My breathing was so damn difficult to the point of being painful. I just wanted to breath! They put oxygen in my nose via a tube and gave me a shot of...something.. nitroglycerin? but than I must of passed out cause I don't even remember being in the ER. I was later told that the paramedics had to resuscitate me cause had flat lined. I still have 3 holes in my chest and have no idea what its from. Not sure I want to know.
I don't remember this but one of the nurses in CCU told me I woke up there speaking Japanese (Which is bizarre because I took four years of it in college but its not my original language, my parents never spoke it.) She said they dialed an interpreter to speak to me, but the interpreter thought it was a prank. He told them,
"What? is this a joke? She's not a native speaker. She sounds like she learned it from a book" but apparently I passed out before they could get a response from me.
The next time I woke up again in the CCU I had asked a nurse if I could use the toilet... She told me there were no toilets in the CCU so I asked her where she went? The nurse said there was a private staff toilet by the nurses station, so I asked if I can go... She of course said no and I promptly passed out again.
Now you got to understand with the heart problems I had at that time affected the kidneys which released toxins into my blood stream. It made me very very paranoid. After my stay in the CCU I was taken up to the 15th (Was it? I don't remember exactly) floor for recovery. I remember going up in the Elevator but that was it..As I got up there and woke again I saw stuff on the walls, trying to figure out where I was. One poster said UCSF and while I did recognise the logo my brain refused to allow me to believe I was in a real hospital.
The staff all wore navy blue outfits and kept asking me my name and did I know what day and year it was, so I got this idea that for some reason they brought me to the wrong hospital. I refused to answer them, and even refused to eat. My neighbor behind the curtain had brought her cellphone and I couldn't find mine. (Never brought it with me) but she was a filipina named Carlita and I tried to call out her name to 1. to tell here we were in a bogus hospital and 2. could i borrow her cellphone to call 911 to come rescue us from these evil people pretending to be real nurses and doctors in a fake hospital.
I hadn't eaten any of the food on their menu because I thought it was drugged, so I woke up with a feeding tube which ran through my nose all the way into my stomach. I don't know why I didn't think that was strange but when I tried to pull on it, it hurt like hell so I left it alone.
Eventually my mind cleared and was told I was being discharged to a Rehabilitation center and if I wanted my feeding tube removed, I had to go there so I was once again taken by an Ambulance to the Center...and assigned a bed next to some woman who spoke only Russian.
Amazing the languages there, Mandarin, Tagalog, Cantonese, Japanese, Russian and English.
My friend Lazlow had heard from my neighbors that I was taken to UCSF and went to my place because the door was already opened by the paramedics, found my keys and cellphones and brought them to me at the hospital.
Rule #1 at Rehab was no one was allowed to walk unassisted so we either used walkers or a wheel chair.. (I got pretty skilled using one, I taught myself how to parallel park!) I was pretty weak as it was having been in the hospital for, ..I don't know for how long. One of the Staff told me when toxins from the kidneys could prevent you from recalling things so my phone came in handy. We would be waken up at 6am, given medications and breakfast at 7am. The coffee was Horrible..was it Folgers? I don't know but it was the only coffee they had so I drank it cause it would help me pee. We were all in pajamas and adult diapers just in case.
7:30 started with physical Therapy doing small exercises designed to get us walking again. My Physical Therapist Hao and Jo were just great. But I had lots of extra time so I called Lazlow and asked him to go to my place and find my Japanese study book. I figured while stuck there I could go back to studying. There was an older lady there who spoke Japanese as well as an older man but I didn't want to bother them with helping me relearn stuff I already apparently had locked away in my brain.
Now I have to tell you, I woke up my first morning there to the sound of haunting horrible wailing. An elder Chinese woman, probably in her 80's with the mind of a 2 year old was screaming "Ah Ma!" over and over and over again for hours. My phone has a translator which includes Cantonese but I couldn't find a meaning. She was like this every morning and even fell out of her wheelchair, and wouldn't stop crying for hours. Her Elder daughter brought her this stuffed toy Rooster, which calmed her down, but it would all start up again when they put it aside and the nurses there hand fed her.
There were a lot of Seniors there. I was told that some were older folks who were placed in that place to spend what was left of their life there.. and that some people were homeless who had medical conditions with no place to go. (How they paid for it was a mystery, because I was told 30 days were free, after that 25% had to be paid...I guess Obama Care made up for the majority of it.)
I pretty much kept to myself but made friends with a Mr. Lee who speaks Cantonese and a little English. I used my phone translator for most of our conversations. He was a pretty cool guy who had a liking for Rice Porridge or Juk. I had some for the first time an managed to sneak three bowls of it, but later found out it had chicken stock with lots of salt in it.
Gah!!
I had a woman who was like a visiting nurse, named Lisa who used to come every Friday to take me out.. I talked to her on the phone as she called me to find out how I was doing. I told her, that when I am released from Rehab I will need to find a part time cook who can make meals (JUK!!) which had very little salt and Sodium, and she said she could do that. Lisa is Chinese and knows a ton of Asian dishes she could make without the salt.
There is a product that is called Bragg's Liquid Amino Acids that tastes just like Soy Sauce with very little Sodium that could be used just like Soy Sauce. I got a brand new rice cooker a year ago, and so we need to make a trip to Japantown to find a roller to make Sushi! Can't use Seaweed, but can still use wasabi and the fake soy sauce for a meal very close to regular Sushi.
I was released today, telling everyone good bye. Laslow was supposed to have picked me up but was across the bay working on a project and Lisa was busy so I took a cab. Its good to be home but I decided I would make a trip to Trader Joe's because I heard they had low sodium food items there. Lisa will cook for me 3 times a week, and when she is not there will put stuff in the freezer so I can nuke it later. I am going Sugar/Salt/Sodium free, or as close as I can get. That means no more fast foods, and I am going to be checking the labels for sodium content. The lower the better. Its time for a healthy lifestyle, food wise...
I have to...because if I end up in an ambulance again, I may not be so lucky next time. I want to have more time to play Monster Hunter World...and you can't do that if you are buried 6 foot under. Also, my Asian Sis, Juju would miss me terribly!

Food was great. She didn't serve things like peas because they are put into a salty brine (or they were back then) to size them. Anyway she learnt all kinds of tricks and the food was wonderful. My uncle lived to be almost 80. My sister cooks without sugar and she got me to try her diet. After a week your sugar craves disappear and eating a tablespoonfull of frozen wild blueberries in your oatmeal with sugar free greek yogurt is sublime. Your taste buds adjust. So sorry you went through hell. (((HUGS)))!

(2,095 posts)Braggs is lower in sodium than regular soy sauce, but I did want to let you know that low sodium soy sauce (depending on the brand) is often lower in sodium than Braggs. The serving size for Braggs is a teaspoon, and the serving on most soy sauces is a tablespoon. So when you do the math, the low sodium soy sauce is less. Check different seaweed brands, some are really low in sodium, Eden Nori is 5mg per sheet. You're right that salt is in everything. If it comes in a box or a can, chances are it's too high in sodium.
I hope that your continued recovery is easier. Good luck with the new diet. Remember that it takes about 6 weeks for your tastebuds to get used to the lowered sodium level and during that time everything will taste terribly bland, but you will adjust. Once they do, at some point, someone will give you something that they cooked or from a restaurant and it will be like licking a salt block. You'll be shocked by how salty it is.
yuiyoshida

(8,201 posts)Please be careful with the Braggs liquid aminos. I hate to say this when you're excited about a low sodium soy sauce substitute, but the Braggs isn't low sodium: 320 mg/teaspoon. https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/liquid-aminos-benefits#section2
It won't be easy at first to eat differently, but your taste buds really will adapt. As one of the other posters said, after a week without sugar you won't miss it. My father got used to eating very low sodium as well after a heart attack.
Oh, one more thing: Juju isn't the only one who would miss you.

You will really need to read labels as salt and sugar are in so many things you don't expect. I went to buy some albacore tuna in water...figured it was just those 2 ingredients. But it also had 'sea salt' in it for some reason. Another brand had added soy. I just wanted plain tuna!! Beware!!
Anyway, once again, I'm happy to hear that you are on the mend. Please take care and know that there are many fans out here that are thinking of you and sending tons of love your way!

(41,831 posts)the label shows low salt, low sodium and low sugar. I may donate my can goods to a food

(51,585 posts)is salt and sugar in EVERYTHING! Thank goodness I love to cook from scratch and have been on a lifelong diet so I am used to going "without". When my older dog had heart problems I had to make everything without any salt for her hoping she felt like eating some of it. It isn't too hard once you get familiar with the routine and certain products.
Are you allowed to eat fake sugar, it isn't quite the same but is better than saccharine? If so, get Trader Joe's plain yogurt for under $3 for 32 oz. I eat that with cooked fresh fruit that is cooled (like straw. or blueberries). Yum!

She knows the sound of Russian, but doesn't understand a word of it, and gets very frustrated while attempting to listen in on whatever it was I was dreaming about. Now, I didn't even start learning Russian until I was 17, so it is not only not my native language, it is not my first, second or even third language. English, French, Spanish, Catalan and Italian came first. So why I was talking in Russian on some particular night I couldn't tell you.

Re salt, herbs are the trick. I do lots of healthy food cooking and once you fall in love with your herbs, you won't even care about salt. My preference is for Asian foods, so I know it can be done.

(565 posts)Table salt yes! Sea salt, no! Junk food salt? Yeah, that one. Don't give up sea salt that has more minerals in it than any table salt. You said nothing about your magnesium. All the talk about salt! Hello? 80% of people that go to the ER have low magnesium and you seem wrapped around salt. Sodium, get it right and which sodium? The other important mineral is potassium. How's your potassium? All of these work together, so before you destroy salt or quality sea salt, please look at the other essential electrolytes. How's your fruit diet? How do you get your potassium and magnesium should be the question.
I'm not a doc. I've been working out my whole life. These are the electrolytes to be concerned with and not gatoraid or any other sports drink for that matter.

The rehab centers are also where families put their elderly family members who need 24 hour care. Many of them have Alzheimers and it can be difficult. (3,430 posts)And the Bragg's Liquid Aminos is a staple, I mix a dab of Wasabi and its a comparable experience for sushi. Be well, I'm not a doctor and recommend a nutritionIst along with two suggestions: when you can handle them; a cup or two of organic no sugar added apple sauce with a dash of (ceylon) cinnamon, and a cup or two of water with lemon juice and more water besides. This will give you an intermittent flush of your liver and kidneys, and that may help.

(81,220 posts)Astounding story, my friend. SO nice to hear youre out on the other side of that! Thank you so much for letting us all know!
Because of my husbands own health issues, hes had to graduate to a low-salt lifestyle for good. And he, too, is feeling better now. I guess I lucked out - Ive never been a salt-lover. People usually have to add a little salt to when I make mashed potatoes because I use so little even when fixing them.
But its not a bad world to be in. Just shopping the other day, we were noticing how many more low-salt/low-sodium choices there are, now. So you can still enjoy flavorful eating! And there are salt substitutes now.
My late dad ate a whole plateful of Sunday dinner before he realized we had switched the salt on the dinner table with a salt substitute. And as he pushed his chair away in the usual close-of-dinner routine of oh I dont feel so good, gotta go home, he stopped and looked puzzled. Something wasnt right. Yep. Something was different this time, because the sick feeling he expected WASNT there! And then, we told him of the switch wed made. And he actually got MAD!!!
Go figure...

(2,215 posts)You are my sister and best friend, I love you and I know you love me. We have each other as strength in our bond of friendship. That is all that matters is that you have someone you can count on. I'll always stop what I'm doing for you because you made a difference in my life. I know you're sick and have many medical issues but I have NEVER seen someone like you have ALL these medical issues and STILL keep the smartass sense of wonderful stoner humor like you. I swear you are one of the most wonderful women I've ever known.
You have blessed my life with your love and friendship Yui.
