They were just starting to improve the area before the Superbowl they had. I was able to review some of the property transfers in the area where we were working. Originally they were all French farmers. Then after the US acquired Detroit the French were bought/pushed out by American entrepreneurs in the early 19th century. (We found the foundations of a sash (doors, windows) factory and an ice house, among other things.) In the mid 19th c. the properties were all foreclosed on by bankers, who then quickly turned the properties over to railroad interests. The side street to the property we were working on was named after a banker. The riverfront became an industrial/freight rail yard area through the rest of the century until GM and the auto industry started taking over in the early 20th c.

I just always thought the process of property transition was kind of interesting.
