BIG house cats...

Pretty big ones here!

Is Rupert the cat the world's biggest kitty? Already weighing in at about 20 pounds, the giant breed Maine coon cat is three times bigger than the average cat. Rupert has also been named cat-of-the-year three times in Australia according to the Daily Mail.(Chris Scott/Newspix/Rex USA)

Stewie, a 5-year-old Maine coon from Reno, Nev., has broken the Guinness World Record for the world's longest domestic cat. According to the Reno Gazette-Journal, the colossal kitty won the distinction for measuring 48.5 inches (more than 4 feet) from the tip of his nose to the tip of his tail bone. The previous record-holder was also a Maine coon that stretched 48 inches. Stewie's owners, Robin Hendrickson and Erik Brandsness, said they decided to go for the record after encountering so many people who marveled at Stewie's size. I have a cat who clearly has a little Maine Coon ancestry in him--not even close to pure bred, but 12 pounds in size at a year old, and with the typical ear tufts, bottle-brush tail, and huge feet. He's a cuddler and super sweet--he'll climb up into my arms when he feels like nuzzling, and even fall asleep cradled on his back. But he hunts voraciously and will even eat anything that the other cats bring in and drop.

have you ever left them in the care of someone else? I look after a Maine Coon when his people are vacationing, and that cat is spooky silent, always looking at me like he is angry as if he is just waiting his chance. His people claim he is loving, adorable, and "talks" all the time. I'm very nice to this cat - why won't he come around?

My aunt's Maine Coon used to follow me around her apartment, and every time I sat down, the cat would sit under my chair and swipe his huge paws at my ankles. He wasn't trying to hurt me, I don't think; rather, he was just trying to make sure I knew he was there. One day I walked in, and sat right down on the floor, so he couldn't get under. Poor kitty was surprised for a second, and then jumped in my lap, and laid there during my whole visit. He was nice.

Other than it's immense size, I too couldn't get over how friendly he was. Usually when I visit people with cats, at best it's all they can do to tolerate me petting them. This thing wouldn't leave me alone. Cool animal.

Then there was Meow, the recently deceased 40-pounder.

edit: Among the living, an Oregon neighborhood was recently abuzz over a cougar sighting, which turned out to be this fellow:

Pets are only allowed to walk around here on leashes. I'd love to have a pet to take outside but don't want a dog, I prefer felines. I'm guessing if a dog saw a cat that big and mellow, they'd react to as if it was another dog. Am i wrong?

They had one adult male, about 2 or 3 adult females at any one time, and there was at least 1 litter of kittens each year. Sleepovers were a hoot, waking up in the middle of the night as a herd of pre-adolescents gallops throughout the house and over your sleeping bag with you in it.

not any more! He is constantly snacking, and steals her wet food!

They are both sweet as can be and love to sleep on our chests while we watch TV. I have longish hair, so Gizmo burrows himself under it and kneads with his paws and nibbles on my ear!

I'm working on making more videos of them, and because I've been recording them constantly I have over 250 clips to be edited down so far. I figure they will grow fast, so why not record now and edit this fall?

Who is Stewart Gilligan Liebowitz G EP. He's a 23-lb Maine Coon who is slightly underweight according to his vet and is mostly muscle and hair. He can (and does) carry gallon jugs of water in his teeth to play with (messy as hell; I try to hide them from him). He's a very, very sweet and gentle cat ... or it wouldn't be safe to sleep with him!
