In grammar school or high school, did you ever have a "class clown"?

Last edited Mon Mar 30, 2020, 06:46 PM - Edit history (1)

George Carlin's 4th comedy album was "Class Clown"

I remember in high school, we had a "comedy team" of 2 class clowns, Burton & Burns.
They cracked us up many times.
But it was a very strict Catholic school, mostly Jesuit priests & brothers, so they were careful not to crack any jokes in the classes taught by the priests or brothers.
However, one of the lay teachers, Mr. Mello, got an earful often, because he wasn't strict at all.
Example: "Mr. Mello! What a wonderful fellow!"

Did you remember having any "class clowns"?

Unfortunately, he was also very troubled and the teacher actually made things worse. I often wonder what happened to him.

Looking back it, the kid clearly had some mental health or mental retardation issues. Teachers did what they could, but he was very disruptive in class.

But I think he had a terrible home life. I'm positive he was abused. This was back in the 60s and the school didn't really intervene back then, at least to my knowledge. There are several kids I look back now and feel so bad for. When we were living it though, it was just the way it was.

Whap a kid on the back of the neck with a spiral note book. Jam a kid up against a locker while he spit yelled “You think you’re funny now” in the kid’s face.

Mr. Mello was a laid-back kind of guy, and he tolerated their "act"

(But, if they tried that with one of the Jesuits, all hell would break loose)

at our 20th reunion, his wife asked us who the class clown was and we all pointed at Wayne. I thought she was going to totally lose it

His name was Don Cash. He came from Tennessee. He was a minor relative of the musical Cash family.

The only thing I really remember about this guy is the vast amount of coffee he drank.
