Lying between the Ozark and Ouachita Mountains, the pools formed by Toad Suck Ferry, Murray Lock and Dam, and Arthur V. Ormond Lock and Dam, reach 80 miles up the Arkansas River from Little Rock, to Dardanelle, Arkansas. I know the name has nothing to do with sucking toads. I've seen different theories for the name. One theory is that river men would suck on bottles at a tavern "till they swole-up like toads." Another is that the name is a corruption of a French word - like Smackover.

Either way, it's the coolest place name in Arkansas.
