(38,187 posts)The babies are so much fun to watch, doing their acrobatics in the trees in my backyard. I have always welcomed them at the bird feeders, unlike most people, who seem to want to fight them. They are cute and very smart.

(62,444 posts)I can tell you that she doesn't seem crazy about Brazil nuts.
For eating on the deck, I think she prefers walnuts. For takeout (and bury), I think it's a tossup between almonds and hazelnuts. I think she'll stick around and eat the walnuts since they are soft and won't keep well, though.
I'll have to set up a preference test of some kind.
I keep a variety of nuts around to keep me from snacking on things I shouldn't. I should put in a good word for nuts.com, for anyone looking for quality unsalted nuts of any sort. Shelled Brazil nuts are, in my opinion, the height of luxury.

(16,373 posts)They all cost a lot now though, with the exception of peanuts. It sounds like you're observing her a lot; it would be a great experiment. Plus, I wonder if individual squirrels have different tastes and preferences?

(9,639 posts)They don't bother working their way to the nut. The avocados that fall off the tree are ruined by the squirrels. They nibble on them a little bit, just enough so that a human would never want to touch it. Then they leave.
Same for anything I try to grow in the garden.
Yes they are cute. But they are destructive.

(62,444 posts)I'd go out on my porch to sit or have a smoke and he would come from several trees away just to climb down the trunk of one next to the porch and cuss at me. He'd make a heck of a racket and twitch around until I left.

(55,004 posts)and I even raised an orphan a few years ago, but they are so freaking destructive to buildings and vehicles. and if they get cornered or angry they can really bite and they are fast. razor sharp teeth that will make you bleed a lot for a long time. be careful.

(17,471 posts)They are cute and we enjoy watching them, and they keep my Lab exercised. As far at the dog is concerned they are all dastardly villains who must be run up a tree. She is like Eastwood shouting, "get off my lawn."

(13,470 posts)you give them the good stuff. Our squirrels only get peanuts and bird seed if they can get it before the birds do.

(16,296 posts)They would run after them (never catching them) and the squirrels would scoot up a tree. The tree was a live oak full of nuts which the
squirrels would throw at the cats . I swear to the truth of this.
ALSO: BE AWARE - Brazil nuts are high in Selenium which is naturally found in many foods, although the levels generally reflect the amount of the mineral found in the soil where the food is grown. The best dietary source of selenium is Brazil nuts and eating 3 nuts per day gets you to approximately 200 mcg of selenium. Other sources of selenium include tuna, sardines, ham, shrimp and halibut, but the levels in these foods is much lower. For those with Autoimmune Thyroiditis, selenium may be an important supportive treatment to use in conjunction with thyroid hormone replacement therapies.
I'm taking thyroid meds and the doc recommended Brazil nuts - but to treat them as medication and not eat more than two per day.

(14,638 posts)Every year, we have a race to harvest our peaches before the little piggies steal them all. We never knew what was happening. We though maybe a neighbor was taking them, but couldn't believe anyone would be that blatant.
We get hundreds. But prefer not to pick them until they are ripe. So do they. Every day, we will find some on the ground with a nibble here and a nibble there.
Then, just as we are about to harvest them the trees get stripped clean in the very early morning. I watched them on a security camera run up the tree, grab a peach, and then run off with it. Rinse lather repeat. They weren't eating them, just picking and stealing them.
That means war..... bwah bwah bwah.......

Truth be told, he could probably take both of the dogs.
