Apparently Margaret Mitchell was, in spite of being an Atlanta girl, a bit of a flapper. She scandalized the friends and family. Scarlett's original name was Pansy and she was a modern (20s) girl, but somehow it didn't work out and Mitchell decided to make her a belle in the Old South. She apparently got a kick out of being representative of Southern Bellehood, since she had short hair, short skirts, and was a free spirit.
