I generally think of it as patriotic hoopla and war is good in a way sorta movie. I
know this isn't of much help....sorry.

I would add extremely corny theme throughout. However, I think the actors made the most of it. If you look at the cast it's practically a who's who list of A-list celebrities at the time. It was nominated in all the major academy awards categories and won most of them. If you like 50's era big box office movies, this is the one to see.

Screen adaptation of James Jones' blockbuster novel.

Remember the 'horse head' scene in "The Godfather"?
It's rumored that a similar happening is what got Sinatra the part of Maggio which re-started his career.

And the Lancaster-Kerr beach love scene was the steamiest thing we'd ever seen onscreen.

Not to mention the delicious guilty pleasure of seeing Donna Reed as a hooker years before she became Super-Mom on 'The Donna Reed Show'.
