Which nut is it?
I'm excluding Peanuts because they're so ubiquitous ... and also they're legumes ... so you are choosing APART from Peanuts.
Also excluded: Nut Milks ... you don't have to pick Almond just so you can have Almond Milk.

(106,488 posts)I guess pecans would be the hardest to give up but the one I eat the most is almonds...

(14,279 posts)The southern Pee-Can, or the Puh-Con found up north?
After I went to college and got sophisticated (actually, just didn't want to be identified as the hillbilly I was as a youth) I made the mistake of pronouncing the nut as a puh-con in front of my Dad. He asked me, "And where would you throw the shells, in a trash con?"

(30,220 posts)I know, I am allergic to tree nuts.
macadamia nuts are actually tree nuts, but are so evolutionary different from other tree nuts that they do not contain the chemical that I am allergic to.
Coconuts fall into that same category.

I'm allergic to mangoes because of poison ivy...But the mango allergy is a contact dermatitis and only occurs when enough juice accumulates around my mouth. I do not have an allergic reaction to cashews or pistachios.
Cashews are not legumes

cuz if it's just one nut - I'll take the coco de mer
coco de mer
The world's largest and heaviest nut, found on just two islands of the Seychelles archipelago in the Indian Ocean, the coco de mer palm has seeds or nuts that reach half a metre in diameter and can weigh as much as 25 kilograms.
Yeah, yeah, I know what they look like . . .

" what does coco de mer taste like?
The seed of the Coco de Mer is the largest in the world. Each one weighs about the same as three bowling balls.
When foragers harvest the fruit earlywhile the seed is still formingit contains a milky jelly that tastes like a sweet, slightly citrusy coconut with the texture of soft Turkish delight."
BTW - ya din' answer my question -
So - gonna assume you mean one KIND of nut,
and that would be cashews, although I like pistachios, brazil nuts and so on
I luv the flavor, and no shells to mess with

(34,384 posts)I chose Pistachio although it could have been Cashew. The last time I ate a Cashew will likely be the last time I eat one in any volume other than one. GP does not allow nuts in the GI tract, lol. At least not for long!
Nuts, the world will be a sadder place without them.

MuseRider
(34,384 posts)My GI tract does not care for much. I guess I can be grateful for the weight loss . *I think it is the fat that is the problem, at least mostly. Not sure, new at getting this figured out.
I just learned that in this thread too.
LeftInTX
(30,132 posts)It includes allergy provoking species such as poison ivy and mangoes. If you have problems with mangoes, could be an allergy.

Brazil nuts are a 1.
Just sayin'
2naSalit
(92,959 posts)But I really like them as a snack.
So I guess I have to go with Pecans because that's all I have purchased for the last few years. I put them on ice cream, in my smoothies, in cookies and oatmeal so I guess they would be my choice.
mr_lebowski
(33,643 posts)I've spent my life avoiding them since I was a kid ... maybe they're better than I remember. I'll try one next time it intrudes into my world, in your honor
2naSalit
(92,959 posts)I hope it's a good experience! I think I'll get a package of shelled ones next time I go shopping in the city. I haven't been there, it's over the pass, since last March when I went to Costco to stock up on provisions. Mostly I just go to one of the two stores in the county seat, guess you could call it a city, don't know where I'd find them 'round that town.
Happy Holly-Daze!
mr_lebowski
(33,643 posts)And a Safeway, and a Sprouts < 1 miles from your house like I do?
Probably also don't have McDonalds, Del Taco, Jack in the Box, Wendy's, Culvers, Burger King, Popeyes, Wiernershnitzel, Wing Stop, Sonic, and Raising Cains within a similar distance?
That must be nice actually
One thing I bet is NOT as nice though ... you probably couldn't drive to the door of the emergency room of a major regional hospital in about 70 seconds, like I can
2naSalit
(92,959 posts)A trip to the nearest actual town with stores is a 65 mile round trip, planning is essential. Going to the city, the county seat of the next county over has most of the big box stores that are in the region. That's a 130 mile round trip which is still shorter than when I was up in the mountains, that was 110 miles one way to the same city, the next closest was 120 miles one way and was in another state. A reliable vehicle is mandatory, and knowing your neighbors.
And I like it because I don't hear sirens, jets except in rare occasions and we don't have street lights. The sky, when not cloudy is amazing and a little daunting at night but I catch glimpses of the ISS when it goes by and meteor when there isn't a shower, satellites and stuff that moves around in ways that could make you think it wasn't built by humans. And that's what I love about, and nobody "just stops by" because you have to make a concerted effort to get here.
The drawback is all the tourists who get lost and *rumpers who live around here.

(30,132 posts)We would crack nuts, but those stupid Brazil nuts stuck to the shell...forget that!!!
A_Woman_from_MI
(177 posts)I love nuts! (Kindly do not read more into that statement than is indicated by this poll.)
An argument can be made that almonds, pistachios, and cashews are also not nuts.
I was torn between cashews and pistachios, but in the end had to go for pistachios. Because, um, well... YUM!
mr_lebowski
(33,643 posts)Cashews are Legumes like Peanuts, though they grow in trees, unlike Peanuts.
Pistachios, Pine Nuts, Macadamias, Brazils are all Seeds.
Walnuts, Pecans, and Almonds are all drupes.
I looked all this up after I posted.
The only actual, 100% undeniable nuts by the biological definition on this list are actually Hazelnuts.
A couple of other bona-fide nuts are Acorns and Chestnuts.
Interestingly I also learned that with real nuts like the above, the nut part we eat is actually considered 'dried fruit'.
And to be a proper nut, you must have a very hard shell that does not open up on it's own during the plants growth (though there's more to it than that, that's a bare minimum), and this shelled structure contains both fruit (aka nut) and seed(s).
I also voted Pistachios ... in fact I was eating them when I made this poll!
LeftInTX
(30,132 posts)They are in the same family as pistachios, mangoes and poison ivy

(106,488 posts)Because I eat something with natural ("nuts only" ) peanut butter damned near every day.
mr_lebowski
(33,643 posts)Your picking 'other than peanuts'.
And I'm being told Cashews aren't legumes on the other reply to this subthread
hlthe2b
(106,488 posts)I'd already chosen pecans and almonds. As far as I'm concerned, if we call them "nuts," then I'm going to consider them nuts.
mr_lebowski
(33,643 posts)Turns out none are legumes.
And only one is a 'true nut', in the botanical sense.
5 are seeds, and 3 are 'drupes', and one is a true nut.
Anyways, this was fun

(28,843 posts)They're all over the place in this state. Hell, we have a good-sized river (the Nueces) that the Spaniards named to reflect the huge number of pecan trees they encountered. I like pecans, but not quite as much as hazelnuts.
