Turtles for me. While I loathe Mitch McConnell, I try not to think about him when I reach for more delicious Turtles. Maple fudge is another guilty pleasure.
I made shortbread cookies for my wife about 10 days ago. She has finished the batch, only giving away a few. I told her I'd make more but she says, "Don't you dare" because she can't stop eating them.

(60,014 posts)compared to years past. The worst - we have a clear Christmas tree shaped candy jar. Over the last 3 weeks, about 4 big packages of peanut butter or peanut M and Ms inhabited it, as well as a big bag of Ghiradelli peppermint bark squares. It has been hit often, now empty.
We've kept our meals sane (probably eating a bit too much bread and olive oil). Cold weather has reduced our walking, so I am feeling somewhat "thick" - gardening always takes about 10 lbs off me spring through fall, and that 10 tends to be reapplied over the winter.

(22,250 posts)Part of the problem is that we have been limiting trips to the grocery, which reduces my supply of produce.
I love coming home with a bag of fresh goodies and making great dishes with them.
Carbs are easy, do not require much thought and are quite satisfying.
Not much in the way of sweets though. I only baked 3 cakes and they all went out the door to other households.
I have a plan to make a batch of lemon bars, which were supposed to be part of our Christmas dinner but that did not happen Maybe that will be our New Year's treat

(22,250 posts)What did you do with the leftover egg whites from German Chocolate Cake topping?
Assuming you made one, of course.
I made one of those for a friend (it was a purchase at a fundraiser) and did not use the spare egg whites. I could have made meringues but I think I waited too long
When I was still living with my mom & dad, we made a German's Chocolate, a coconut and a jam cake. The coconut pecan topping only uses egg yolks leaving 3 egg whites, which could be used for boiled frosting for the coconut cake or to make divinity.

(11,579 posts)My Grandma made the best and would keep them in a large biscuit tin that I just could not keep my hands out of. Something about the light snap of the thick bar and then the feel of it melting in my mouth and dissolving in buttery goodness that stayed on my tongue. Guests would come and she and my mom would wonder where all the cookies went as they looked in my direction. In my defense I was a kid, but if that tin of cookies reappeared I know that I would not fare any better as a grown-up.

(22,250 posts)It is a slight variation of Egg Nog which does not require booze & sugar to "cook " the eggs.
Those teetotallers in the Southeast developed it to avoid the whiskey or rum.
I used to laugh at the old ladies in my family; alcohol was a mortal sin but they would not even think of having their custard without "flavoring".
Boiled custard is a mighty fine drine, especially with the coconut cake. Bonus: you can made excellent ice cream with it

(7,513 posts)I basically could drink a quart in 20 minutes but am able to control that - mainly because I nod off beforehand. Also love turtles but didn't get them this year. That does give me an idea - they would go great with spiked egg nog.
