(808 posts)We lost our 15-year-old German shepherd last May and still miss her. We adopted her from a rescue when she was around two. We miss the laughs and the daily routine. We were just saying this morning that it would be so much nicer being stuck inside the house if she was here with us.

(3,014 posts)Around the same time. Also rescued her as a young adult. After she was gone it seemed all the colors were dull.
We ended up adopting two new rescues pretty soon thereafter. We werent quite ready but they needed a new home so badly. They helped us work through the grief. But I still miss her everyday and find myself crying spontaneously.
I'm so sorry you lost your sweet girl, but glad that you have some new companions to help fill your hearts. I hope I can convince my husband to open our home to another rescue dog eventually.

(28,117 posts)...for the last 8 weeks.
Our sweetest ever Yellow Lab was suffering with a previously undetected congenital heart value problem & was in so much pain that we had to put her down just 8 wks ago. I held her head as she passed away.
She was *only 5*! And was so very kind to everyone & every critter she ever met- there wasn't an oz of aggression in her sweet sweet soul.
She even tolerated my pet wild squirrel coming into the house.
2 days after her death, my husband's mind created an apparition of her - superstitious folks would say he saw her ghost & it'd be wonderful to think it was.
So, yes, this pic deeply touched my heart.
What was your dear Shepherd girl's name?

(808 posts)She sounds like she was a wonderful girl. That is way too young to lose her. Our girl's name was Heidi. She was a real handful when we first got her. She was very dog reactive, she didn't like certain people, also very fearful. It took almost a year for her to warm up to my husband. She was returned to the rescue by the first person who adopted her because her vet told her she was a "bad dog." Although it wasn't easy, we stuck with her and she turned out to be the best, smartest, and most loyal companion. She mellowed out as she got older and never failed to get compliments on her looks and her good manners when we took her out on walks. It's very lonely without her but we do feel good knowing she had a very happy life with us.

(11,562 posts)I'm sure dreading that day, when our Cairn, Ozzie passes. (Any idea why he's named "Ozzie"
I call him Cairn of Steel, because he has survived, in chron. order, being hit by a car, a bacterial infection throughout his intestinal tract, pancreatitis (was sloughing his intestinal lining which was HORRIFYING to see), climbing to an impossible spot and eating a baseball sized bag of Rollos meant for Xmas cookies, getting into the groceries (I swear it only took a moment) and eating close to half a pound of dark chocolate.
That was just a few weeks ago, and, BION, he is 13 and STILL healthy as a horse. I think a good part of the reason he stays alive and healthy is so he can torture us some more.

(162 posts)We lost our 9 year old Westie 9 years ago and my husband still gets sad when he goes to the vet with our 8 year old Scottish terrier, Mollie. She is so good she doesn't do anything if she knows we don't want her to. She has never even gotten into her dog food bag. She stays right by our side and loves it when we take her with us (which is almost always). We got her from White Shadow Ranch, a kennel that sells Cairns and Scottish terriers. They stopped selling Westies. The cairns are adorable but seem really rambunctious. Sounds like yours is. Isn't 13 pretty old for a cairn?

(28,117 posts)What a pic. If this doesn't portray grief, don't know what does.
Everyone who's ever owned & deeply loved a good dog with all their heart can relate to this.
Thank you.
