(54,330 posts)I played in a rock group in the DC area in 1966-68 that played songs from the Dead's first album, including that one. We usually used to open our sets with the version of "Cold Rain And Snow" from the album. Only years later did we find out that the Dead were all on speed when they recorded it, and when they played it live, it was much slower. We might have even opened for them except that the place we were playing, the short-lived Washington version of the Fillmore East, but never got together with the Dead's manager on the money. The Dead were not far away at the time, I think New York, but they never came down.

(19,192 posts)Between Anthem of the Sun, I Feel Like I'm Fixin' to Die, and Surrealistic Pillow, they formed my introduction to the "Acid Rock" California sound. I lived on the east coast and the west coast seemed so far away, a completely different world. I managed to make my pilgrimage there during a "gap year" I decided to take after my freshman year in college. The hippie scene was in it's late stage then, when things at the Haight Ashbury area were getting to be an overcrowded, tragic mess. By the end of that year I was glad to return to my studies and greet the 70s, a whole different scene. If I had a dollar for every time I heard "Morning Dew"..... I'd have a lot of dollars.
Great memories. Thanks for posting.
