Suffolk County, NY, hasn’t allowed cesspools in new construction since 13 years before this house was built.

Things that concern me: the heating system is an oil boiler, it needs new windows, and if I bought this place the first thing I would have to do is drop $50,000 on new patio doors just for the dining room. This house has four vinyl sliders. No. Fucking. Way. My own house came with one of those. I replaced it with an Andersen Series A Frenchwood inswing door. That cost me nearly $12,000 and it was money well spent. I will accept nothing less. So, $50k to replace the patio doors, another $50k to replace all the windows, probably $20k for a Mitsubishi heating system, $15,000 for new appliances, $10k to hire someone to get rid of that weird “cook whilst you pee” mother-in-law apartment...The house seems to be in marvelous shape, but by the time I got it to where I wanted it you could easily buy a different home with just the money for upgrades to this one.

I thought that all states prohibited an open bathroom next to a kitchen. I thought that even a closed bathroom was to be not adjoining a kitchen. That cannot be an approved layout.

The bathroom was an addition. When the house was built it didn't have an interior bathroom at all -- there was an outhouse in the backyard. Families bathed in the kitchen in a tub using water heated on the stove.

The furnace was this huge cast iron thing in the basement. It had originally been a coal furnace, than it was converted to oil, and by the time we bought the house it had been converted to natural gas.
