(7,503 posts)$5,000 will split a family. A trust with multiple assets will fracture it. I was in financial services and insurance I counseled my clients to make sure things go to the person you want to have them. If they told me their family was different they could be trusted to share I'd give them examples. People will always justify their selfishness.

(9,165 posts)Entire families would be at each others throats over a few thousand dollars.
My humanities professor used a quote about nations going to war: When the flags unfurl, the brains go in the trumpet.
Thats what family disputes are like. No rational thought, just I want mine. And yours.

(7,911 posts)I was sole caregiver for my mom while her dementia progressed over a period of 8 years. My mom wanted to leave her entire estate to me as payment for my 7/24 live-in care giving. Both of my sisters agreed, and when my mom passed my sisters were happy to make sure it all came to me, including the house. It worked out to way less than minimum wage, and I gave a big chunk of it to charity. But in the end everybody was happy.
I love my sisters dearly, even though they are both pretty right-wing.
