2. Until that moran spoke, I had always thought that beer was "plant-based". At least, I had

always thought that hops and barley were. . .well. . .plants. Apparently I was wrong. Does this mean that I have to return my Master Gardener certification??

Even though I can't drink it, I thought I understood its basic composition.

How was your anniversary celebration?

39. The fermentation is done with malt,

which is related to yeast, and I understood both were close to fungi. But even if they were animal in nature, I certainly wouldn't expect anyone in the GOP to know it.

44. malt is just sprouted and (usually) roasted barley

yeast is the fermenting agent and is a fungi

My beer has pilsner and wheat malts, Vanguard hops, and raspberry puree was added after filtration.

Why would anyone indulge in something made only for herbivores?

calle Bear Piss. Never tried it, so don't ask.

I did try Old Froth and Slosh (also a seasonal limited edition) once though, and as I recall it was pretty good. But that was over 50 years ago.

40. I shudder to think what a non plant based beer might contain

although I know some tribal people in central Asia ferment the milk of their herd animals into an alcoholic drink. I'm lactose intolerant to the max, so I'll pass. I also wouldn't call it "beer," following the lead of anthropologists who have tasted the stuff.

42. That was my forst thought.

What ferments to make alcohol is the carbs. We may need to eat them, but most animal parts don't have enough carbs to ferment. Even many plants need sugar added to ferment. But, yeah, I guess milk could be fermented, with some effort.

43. One I'd like to try some day is chicha

but the feremented kind, not the chewed and spit out kind. The fermented ones pretty much follow the barley based beer, maize and possibly other local grains sprouted to release the sugars, dried, ground, and mixed with hot water and allowed to ferment for a week or so. The stuff I've seen in videos comes in a lot of colors, so they're likely sweetened with fruit flavors. Chicha will also get you hammered if you drink enough of it, it can be as potent as homebrew, my homebrew delivering a solid kick.

Still, the ognorance quoted in the OP was absolutely staggering. Even people who don't brew it have a hazy idea where it comes from.

impression that ALL beer is plant based. Maybe I misread your post but isn't all beer made from materials drawn from Kingdom Plantae? I LOVE the hard cidres, fruit liqueurs, ales & meads but beer? (as in hops & the like?), No mam! I have to say I wasn't aware that there has ever been a beer made from animals..Maybe, I'm woefully uninformed? What am I missing here?

... strategies on Fox News, proclaiming that we'll someday be unable to consume animal products and instead be forced to grill Brussel sprouts and drink plant-based beer.

I didn't know what it meant either, but found the answer with a Google search. It happened yesterday, apparently.

53. That's not what I heard.

I heard Coors Lite is made when a dyspeptic brewer with gonorrhea and a urinary tract infection pees into stagnant rainwater, collects it in an untanned deerskin, leaves it on a dusty shelf for three years, and then cans it.

I don't know what sleight-of-hand Coors has to do to get the FDA to label their stuff 'beer', but they're allowed to get away with it...
