Back in the mid-50's, when every kid who could, got a Micky Mouse hat, I got a Donald Duck hat. It had a bill with a low pitched squeaker in it that sounded like a duck. I even got very good at imitating his voice, and just about drove my parents nuts. I still have the hat!

But never fought for the rights of other dogs.

Later in life, Goofy said that if he had taken a stand, he never would have had the chance to raise consciousness in general about anthropomorphic dogs and provide a positive role model. But it turned out, he’d had litters of puppies that Disney covered up but took most of his salary to pay off all his puppy mamas - famously causing the divorce between Mickey and Minnie.

But Goofy paved the way for greats who were inspired by him like Scooby Doo, Underdog, Deputy Dawg, and Snoop Dogg.

There’s an unauthorized adult biopic that tells the whole story of Mickey’s Dog, The Dark Side of Pluto : Doin’ It Doggy Style.

That’s what caused the divorce.

At first the judge said, “Insanity is not a grounds for divorce.”

And Mickey said, “I didn’t say she was crazy. I said she was f’ing Goofy!”

...and that's really sad, because Speedy and Mickey are actually brothers. There were five of them--Ernesto--"Speedy"--the oldest, older than he looked because he was a runner for Pancho Villa in his youth. Miguel--Mickey--who got fame and fortune posing as a Gringo. Geraldo--Jerry--also became an Honorary Gringo, and was almost as famous as Mickey. Ignacio--Ignatz--found happiness with what he called Loco Cat, whom he threw bricks at. And the youngest, Carlos, was transformed by the radiation of the Trinity Test in 1945 into Mighty Mouse. Speedy would urge him to use his powers to overthrow the US and restore the Southwest to Mexico, but Carlos rightly pointed out that the Gringos had the atom bomb, to which Ernesto would mock him as a coward. Ernesto was famous in Hollywood as a ladies' man--a famous quote was attributed to Tallulah Bankhead, that he could run up her leg anytime--and he really enjoyed the thought that he was cuckolding Miguel. The brothers never reconciled...

But at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, England, there is a very large, antique telescope at the larger end of which was applied a Pluto sticker, such that when you were standing in line waiting for your turn to look through it, the person before you would exclaim, “Oh, Pluto!” and you would step up to it expecting to see a planet, but find a cartoon dog instead. Really funny, actually.

38. If you watch the old Mickey Mouse
Sat May 1, 2021, 06:13 PM
May 2021

That is, the OLD old Mickey Mouse from ca. 1928-1930, you can get an idea of his appeal (even if you don't particularly like the kind of humor). They used a lot of sight gags and animated quirks which audiences at the time found hilarious. Also, Mickey was a sly, mischievous character very different from what you see today.

As the 1930's progressed, Mickey's character became more conservative and sophisticated, and he lost his appeal. Mickey faded in favor of more interesting characters like Donald and Goofy. His "new look" in The Sorcerer's Apprentice in 1940 was supposed to have been "Mickey's comeback," but even then he did very little more than fill in as a straight man for most of the rest of his career.

Warner Brothers had sass and lunacy. Where Disney would go for the Ahs and Ohs when they did things to classical music like Fantasia, Bugs would go for the laughs like the Barber of Seville cartoon with Elmer.

That said, more kids today know Mickey and the gang.
