57. I wanted an older dog, myself
At 65, an older dog would fit us so well, I thought. I'd lost my Leonburger 2 years ago on Xmas day. Ended up rescuing a true Heinz 57 from the pound who's enormous and turned out to be about 2 years old. She'd been abused by males, didn't know how to walk on a leash, wasn't housebroken, and doesn't know how to play with a person. She loves her chew toys and balls... but has no idea how to play ball with a person. We're working on all of it with her. She's a loving goofball who really wants to please you, but isn't the brightest bulb in the pack. I'm open to suggestions on training on any of it, please! Both my Leonburger and my Border Collie were wicked smart. They trained us more than we trained them! This is whole new kettle of fish. During the 2nd walk in the park on a leash, she got distracted, took off running, and sent me flying thru the air holding onto the other end of her leash. I wasn't going to let go; I was afraid she'd get hurt. Instead, when I fell back to the ground, my leg broke in 2 places. My 103 pounds didn't stand against her 77 pounds of pure, unrestrained energy!
I'm waiting for my leg to heal, and then will start looking for a trainer for both Lexy (and myself). Meanwhile, I'm definitely open for suggestions. She's already been adopted and turned back once. I want her to know she has a forever home with us, but there are certain tradeoffs that come with that (LOL)... like don't break Mom's leg! I'd post a pic, but I don't know how. Can someone explain to this newbie? I didn't see an option in the editing tags... |

61. Many of my friends are older
One of my fears is Roxy’s reaction on meeting folks. She doesn’t have viscous intent to people or other dogs, but the Covid thing has restricted her socializing. She’s good on a leash, and we walk her daily. She does like to jump on folks in greeting, we are working on stopping this behavior.
As far as posting pictures, it took me a while to figure this out. Check out https://www.democraticunderground.com/103659987 For guidance. |

A little over a year ago, I fell and broke my leg and ankle. I had to have surgery to place rods and pins so it could heal.
It was slow to heal, but I am happy to say that I am walking 2 miles a day now. |

What an adorable little baby! My sister had a Rottie named Ruby and I just adored that dog more than anything! She looked just like your little Roxy! It's funny, because now she has a 4-year-old Swiss Mountain dog named "Roxy", who is also a sweet gentle giant (I just watched her for a week and 1/2 while they were on vacation).

About issues getting her to relieve herself. Glad you got it worked out.
Dogs are amazing, we really don’t deserve them. I remember the time my husband got a call informing him of the sudden passing of his brother. He cried out in anguish, and our Chihuahua howled along with him. They have more empathy than all Republicans combined. |

23. Their stubbornness is both good and bad
Once you get them trained a certain way, they stick to it. She has her feeding ritual; the bowl comes up onto the counter and gets filled. She must sit, and give us a paw. Then the bowl goes to the floor. Gobble, gobble, gobble. She is an enthusiastic eater. She is also trained to let us play with her food while she is eating. I think this is important, this is a time where dogs are most aggressive. She continues eating while I stir her food. I do this about every other week, I’m always nervous- it’s like playing with a running chainsaw.

Mr. Dixie & I have only ever had rotties. I've had dogs my entire life but my first rottie was the one he had when we first started dating 27 years ago. I am in completely love with the breed. They are very smart and have a wonderful sense of humor.
It's interesting that you mention your trepidation about getting a large breed dog with an unknown upbringing. We were just talking about that the other day and I told my husband the same thing. (Our three rotties all came to us as pups.) The thing about rotties is, they are not your dog, you are their people. My boy takes my whole hand or my forearm arm in his mouth when we're playing but he never hurts me. And I know he won't, either. I trust him because I've raised him from a pup. I don't know that I'd be so comfortable with those teeth if I hadn't. I think your "playing with a running chainsaw" analogy is perfect. Anyway, your girl is gorgeous! I wish you all, Amy included, many years of love and laughter together. ![]() |

Roxy likes to take hands into her mouth, not a snap but a gentle mouthing. We are trying very hard to teach her this is unacceptable. Rottweiler bites exceed shark bites in terms of lbs/in (^2). What she is capable of is scary. Any form of biting must be unacceptable.

47. Love them to bits!
Never took to dogs bigger than a labrador, until I met my grand daughter's Rottie.
Loving, affectionate, your best pal once the boss introduces you, ferociously loyal and protective of their territory and family. Would snatch food out of your hand, until you gave the 'gentle' command, and he would very carefully, just using his front teeth, take the treat. Alas, he is no more. Grand daughter is grieving, and so am I. I gave her money to cover vet bills and get another, but she says, very sadly, in a tiny voice . . . Not Yet. Enjoy Roxy's growing up and company. She looks a charmer. |

51. Hello Roxy
I have a 56 day old black lab. She is number 6 of labs in my adult life. Trail Trekker Taylor is 10 this summer. She is having joint health issues. Her trail days may be done. I got Mountain Shadow Myah to have her step in as trail buddy. I love all my dogs. Puppy days are tough. Those damn teeth. My arms are ripped to bloody stumps,🤣
Slightly exaggerated, and sleep....what sleep? But, that is the cost of molding a great friend into your life style for years of both way love, that is hard to find in other humans. Best of luck and health to your new puppy. Great pix. And to you rescuers, bless you. My daughter is adamant about rescue animals. This may be my last dog and I just wanted to stick with lab, and train from its earliest days. Dogs are soul savers. Less humans and more dogs would Make America Great. Rotties are beautiful. |
