The Ivy League will have football this coming season!

We missed our games, watching Yale Marching Band in their crazy outfits, doing some great comedy, having our tailgate group (a really nice group of people). Malia Obama and Paul McCartney were in attendance about 2 years ago. Malia was a Harvard student, and Sir Paul had a grandson who was at Yale.

The Yale Bowl is old but it is great and has been updated since last year's season. And it's not too far from our house...

Can't wait to see my tailgate friends again!

2. Who knew that the Ivies had football teams?

(One of my cousins is a Harvard grad and I tease her all the time about their "football team".
I am a Big Ten grad and we don't think Ivies can throw a ball.)

3. The Yale "marching band" is called The Yale Precision Marching Band

Basically, it's a satire. They are all excellent musicians but their routine is to go out on the field in goofy costumes and play while marching in a disoriented way. It's a satire on the Big Ten schools marching bands.

The Yale Bowl is actually very cool. It's old and was really showing its age until one of the groups of classes from the 1950s paid to have it upgraded, which they could easily afford to do.

Every other year the Harvard Yale game is played at the Bowl; it's always the last game of the season.

My ex husband went to Harvard. Our daughter has Thanksgiving dinner at her house and has banned discussion of the Harvard Yale game after a few heated "discussions" between us.

My now and forever husband went to U of Wisconsin (Milwaukee) but he likes to root for Yale because we live here in New Haven and because it irks my ex (who thinks the world should salute him because he went to Harvard. Jeez.)

4. Oh my goodness.

That would not fly at all at Ohio State University. We have the best damn band in the land as we call it.

My cousin and best friend has two degrees from Harvard, but she is quite humble and always complains about Harvard.
She also works there now as well. So she is far from obnoxious about it.

My daughter was accepted into Yale for graduate school, and also was accepted into a program at Ohio State.
She joked that she couldn't go to Yale because they didn't have a football team. But she did turn down Yale for real since OSU gave her a lucrative fellowship and other scholarships.

5. A graduate degree from Yale does open doors for you, I must say.

Ivy League football has been around a long time and I weary of all that tradition. But an Ivy League degree is still a pretty valuable commodity.

What program at Yale did she get an acceptance in? I have friends who are Divinity School grads and Law School grads. I don't think they're out on the street begging for money...

8. It should be that which ever school she chooses is best for her particular field, no matter what.

An Ivy League degree is more useful in some fields but not in others.

It sounds like she is shrewd enough to know which is best for her!

11. For her program, OSU was ranked nationally #4, while Yale was ranked #6.

There had been additional national requirements for this specialty and Yale had failed to incorporate those changes into their curriculum. OSU had made the changes.

Yes I agree, if it had been another career field, Yale would have been the better option.

I quit paying attention to football several years ago, but I remembered him being a so-what Titan.

I was a childhood Bears fan and a transplanted Donkey fan until Pat Bowlen took the D off the helmet to threaten departure.

I should shut up and stick to hockey. Go Hawks... better than .500 next year, maybe!

And to be frank, OSU football players have never been described as scholars.
Sad to say. They are at OSU to play ball and that is about it.

7. There's a story in our family I've always heard...

...dunno if it's apocryphal or not, but anyway--I had a great-uncle who went to Yale in the 30s and was on the football team. Supposedly, Ducky Pond, the coach then, gathered the team together before the Yale-Harvard game and told them: "Gentlemen, you are about to play football for Yale against Harvard University. Never again in your lives will you do anything so important." If this story isn't true, it should be...
