At the recommendation of my cardiologists(s) and medical care team, after my second heart attack and "life threatening v-tach," i had to stop teaching and file for disability. I taught middle school, and was now a pass-out risk. Teachers run on adrenaline, and those kids carry sharpies....

I hesitate to use the phrase, but I did my own research into how SSI/SSDI determines "Chronic Heart Failure." Chronic Heart Failure is not a medical term; Congestive Heart failure is. There are various metrics, but the big one was Left Ventricular Ejection Fraction ?30%. The average, healthy, non-damaged has an LVEF of roughly 60%.

My attorney said it's routine to be denied first time around, then approval comes on appeal. Perhaps the routine denial is to weed out the frauds and fakers. We filed in December 2018, and fortunately, I received disability in February, 2020 retroactive to March 2019, six months after the second MI. Lawyer received a flat fee out of the retro settlement. Well worth it to have a professional help navigate the process.

My friend's physician has been recommending disability, but she's scared she'll be turned down and be without income for a long time.

If she can maybe get it retroactive, she can hang in there with savings for awhile.

I would have never got this far this fast (would have been faster without covid) without them.

If you qualify for one you qualify for the other. The only difference is that SSI has income and asset limits. I was a Social Security Disability examiner in my past life. They may be taking more time deciding the SSDI amount if they have not gotten all of your work records.

Congrats! The approval rate is around 51% nationally.

No insurance company for any business wants me due to the risk. Add that I've worked since I was 16, and that I now not work in the field I went to college for....

Lawyers are just waiting for them to pull something, especially when it's their doctors saying I'm in bad shape.

was denied the first time she tried. A year later, 2nd try, she was approved, and got a year's back pay along with the approval. Someone told her, maybe her lawyer, that you are generally denied the first time you try, but if the condition is chronic, not improved or worse, they'll approve it the next time you apply. The back pay was a big surprise.

Glad you will have some financial security. Enjoy that!

And this was before the current rule/mind set applies. Yes, you do get a significant portion (not all) of back pay. BTDT.
