it's easily done with a computer and 3d modeling software. Now, this does not in any way diminish the talent of the artist who thought of it. They likely saw the whole thing in their mind when they had the idea for it.
On a practical matter, to help during the body painting , Y ou can make 3d models of the people, pose them in the final pose and apply what is called a texture map( in this case the finished picture of the butterfly) .
The computer will calculate the mappings. You can then ask it to print 3d models with that mapping unfolded and projected on it for reference for the body paint artist.
Anyhow, these are stunning. Thanks for posting that.
