I sat out on my front porch this evening and couldn't believe all the lightning bugs in the trees and hedges. Twenty years ago, I'd be thrilled to see one or two. People have quit putting so much insecticides on their yards and these little bugs are making a comeback. Looked like it was when I was a kid; lightning bugs everywhere at dusk. So beautiful to see them rise up from the hedges with their tiny lights twinkling in the dark.

It's been a loud shrill out there the entire night.

(4,919 posts)... But I am seeing them bounce back this year.
Did you know you (and other fireflies) can tell the difference between species based on whether they light up while ascending, descending, or other patterns.
Upon edit: Ligyron already posted that info upthread. Thanks!

(4,552 posts)A family from California was visiting the neighborhood. I guess they do not have many lightning Bugs in California.
We were playing in the yard around dusk and the bugs came out. They were kinda freaked out. But then we started catching them.
